MSD and coil proximity

Anybody think I am flirting with disaster with the coil this close to the 6a?

EDIT: the blue one is going to be removed.. the new coil is red below the MSD 6a.

Oh and I guess its safe to assume the voltage regulator is not in use since it came out like this when I removed the bolts.. must have on in the alternator?

I was taught to put the coil as close to the dizzy a possible, like over on the fan shoud where you have a very short run from the coil to the center plug of the dizzy.

The wire running to the distributor (why in the heck do you guys call a ignition distributor a dizzy??) will be about the same as yours or even shorter.. my question is really about the proximity to the MSD box.. I'm concerned about interference.. the manual makes no mention of proximity issues.. I suppose I should call MSD tomorrow and ask..

I hate to move it as I would have to relocate the relay and dont want to do that as it would cause me to work more. :)

BTW... if those are MSD coils you have them installed incorrectly.. they are not black so they are not the high vibration version.. so you have them installed upside down and you have them in a high vibration environment.. Suggest you get the hi vib coils (part #8222). Call MSD and ask them if you'd like to verify my information is correct.. those are oil filled...

Dizzy

Because it is easy to type and everyone knows what I mean.

The man that built the motor bought and placed the coils, if he told me to stand on my head and stack marbles to make my motor run better, you would see me with my bottom in the air and a bag of marbles near by.

Thank you for your advice.

Hmm.. what shall we call an alternator? ;) Took me forever to figure out what a dizzy was.. so I suggest that new members really have no idea what one is... Maybe we should have a pelican translation table .. WUR= Fuel Pressure Regulator etc.. :)

MSD would disagree with your motor builder.. I'd kinda lean toward the manufacture on this one. This install will not cause your engine to run poorly until one or both fail.. but according to MSD this install will cause premature failure.

You're welcome.

Anybody have any idea whether I could be creating a problem due to proximity?

DUK 01-03-2008 04:24 PM

Should be fine. We do this all the time on the racecars.

You just made my day! Thanks!! A few more vibration stand off installs and then wire it up and off I go!! thanks again!

I'm w/Duke on this one. I'd use plenty of dielectric for long term.

and...... I didn't like the direct path of coil wire to dizzy. It flopped around too much for my taste.

So I found out if the coil wire could be lightened. It can. I use the twice as long MSD wire Pelican sells for about $15. You can even mount the coil in the cabin if you had to.

Hell, with 40,000 volts I could leave it at home and run an extension cord! :)

I bought some raw Moroso wire.. Im building my own cables out of that and some Autolite connectors I am modifying.. when all is said and done I should have just bought a nice set of Clewitts or something for the same price.. I am such a cheap skate.

Anyway.. yeah I have a tube of dielectric.. Im addicted to the stuff.. I use it on every connector I can find.. its a sickness..

thanks for the help guys!

I have a similar issue but my coil is the hi-vibration type, my question is posted, about a warning lable on the 6 al box itself. do not use solid core wires.???

Correct.. you must use a wound type.. I frankly do not know what the symptom is with solid core.. I was told you get crosstalk but I am not sure of the source... (the wires actually cause so much EMI that it messes up the MSD box itself)...

No race wire I am aware of is solid core..

RoninLB 01-03-2008 05:40 PM

the magnetic field from one wire jumps into another.

resistor and spiral wire reduce the field.

Formerly Steve Wilkinson 01-03-2008 05:49 PM

That's where I have my MSD boxes--two because it's a twin-plug--and my coils. Works fine.

I agree with you about the dizzy silliness. If you can't type get off the pot. LOL, ROFLMAO, IIRC and all the other moronic text-messaging craziness is ridiculous. What really gets me is the people who insist on putting smiley-faces everywhere to say "only kidding," "not serious," "really pisses me," "I'm confused..." Imagine a Shakespeare play filled with smileys to make sure we knew what he meant.

snbush67 01-03-2008 09:41 PM

LOL.....I know what you mean :D..... Just kidding ;)

i can't type.

i pound keys.

I have been refering to a distributor as a dizzy long before it took typing class in high school.

I lived in Vancouver BC Canada for a couple of years and they shorten up lots of car part names. They called a radiator the "rad".

What kind of air filters are those red ones and where did you get them?
Rob

RLJ 01-04-2008 11:29 AM

Air cleaners

They came as a part of the throttle bodies that I bought when we converted from PMO's to fuel injection.

Here is a pic before the red powder coat was applied.

At least Rad makes a small amount of sense. Dizzy and WUR are pretty (insert word here).
