Uneven Exhaust Pipes
Hi there,
Just thought that i would post this interesting 'issue'. Yesterday i installed a new monty exhaust, for some reason, i cannot seem to get the ehxuast pipes even, the drivers side (RHD car) is about 40mm lower than the passenger side as per the photo below. I can physically lift that side up, but each time i let go it drops that 40mm, i cannot seem to secure it in the even position. Any ideas?? ![]() The metal straps that surround the muffler have been tightened, but as per the photo below, i have kept spacers on the bolts from the previous muffler. If i remove these spacers, would that solve the problem?? ![]() Any help would be greatly received. Exhaust sounds good though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vXspF5D_co |

Try putting a piece of 2" PVC pipe in the pipe and pull up on it. It would have been easier if you hadn't started the car and 'heat cycled' the weld. But it still should work. Had to do that to my M&K not as far off as yours but it worked. I say 2", that's assuming it's a 2" pipe. What ever the diameter is actually. This worked for me anyway.
Good luck with whatever you try.

Looks like the spacers are keeping it from going up tight. Take them out

geez, wont it break the pvc pipe? it's kinda weird cos the entire muffler system sags to the drivers side, probably cos of the weight and the fact that it is only a single inlet, and thus only bolted/secured on the passenger side.

yeah, i reckonn that i'll pull the spacers out and see how that goes, if no luck then i'll try the pvc trick!

I did not have this problem on my '88 non-turbo. Height was fine. I did have to shorten the right outlet to get them the same length. I have read where others had this problem with the Monty dual out. Don't recall the height problem you have. Good luck. Ken

It won't break the pipe, (from experience), I also had to use that trick prior to installation as UPS mangled one of the tips . This isn't my idea, not that smart
, but Bens from M&K. Mine also is a single in duel out. Or try loosening the exhaust from the cat/heat exchanger connection and try lifting that side up.

This is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine. I've had a Borla on a 3.2 that was off and recently a GHL on my 930 that was off. I hate that! You'd think premium expenses they'd be perfect or at least un-noticeable. Good Luck on your issue as I really have no advice because everything I did never corrected my problem. I ended up living with it on the 3.2. On the 930 I took it off and built my own exhaust pipe. But if I was to put the GHL back on I would take it to a machine shop/welder/good muffler shop and have them cut & bend and whatever to make them even. Sorry for being a little off topic but I'm interested in your outcome.

adb01,
Loosen the straps, remove the spacers and then place a floor jack under the offending side and raise it to where you want it. That will allow you to figure out if you need the spacers or if they are too long. Seems the spacer shown on the right is not allowing the strap to go around completely. Also, try switching the straps from side to side.

PS - Place something soft between the jack and muffler or ex.pipe.

yes, it's a major peeve of mine too. I took off both spacers and tightened the living hell out of them, it raised the offending side quite a bit. i also took some advice from Buckterrier and combined with the two i have raised it so its only about 5-10mm out of whack, probably not that noticable to anyone walking past, but i KNOW it's different!!!!
I'll go and try what pozee said................... |

just a further update............... jesus its hot here in Melbourne, about 37C or 98F (whatever you prefer!) Doin some more research, i did what Pozee said, it worked again!!! getting closer, i now think that maybe the problem stems from the PreMuffler thingy (it's a custom jobby, done here in Australia by some bodgy exhaust place), me thinks that if the PreMuffler aint straight, then the exhaust will be out, i suppose it only has to be a fraction out at the PreMuffler, and by the time it reaches the further most point (Drivers side pipe) its even further out.
I'm stuffed........ confused and annoyed..... |

Might sound dumb but if that's all you can get out of the right side, maybe push the left side down with said PVC to match. btw... was 5 degrees F here and a wind chill factor of -11F so...
NO WHINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
