Sporto and MFI
I recently purchased a 2.2T engine with a sporto tranny to convert my '71E back to a sporto.
The T engine has a vacuum connection at the manifold. Does anybody have any idea how the connection on an MFI engine is done? Pictures would be awesome. Parts would even be better! Top $ paid for E MFI sporto throttle bodies. Also, the drivers side cam drives the oil pump. I am not sure how the cam would drive the oil pump and the MFI pump. Same deal here; pictures would be awesome and money money money paid for an E MFI sporto cam. Any profile would work if I could get it reground to E spec. Or is there a way to get the T cam reground to work? Am I missing anything else specific to an MFI sporto? Advice, pictures, leads and parts will all be greatly appreciated. Thanks! BK

Hi BK!
![]() My car used to have a sporto in it and as far as I know the MFI is the original system. I'd be happy to take some pictures for you if I knew where to look.

Thanks guys. I think I have some of it figured out. Fortunately I got a box of 'junk' from the PO. I found a spacer that should be what I need to drive the oil pump off the cam. It looks like the oil pump is driven off the bolt heads that attach the MFI pulley to the cam. If you look closely at the middle picture, you can see the tabs that turn the oil pump. The bolt heads should protrude just enough. We'll see!!
![]() As far as the throttle bodies, stock MFI throttle bodies already have the bosses for the vacuum connections. They can be drilled and tapped for the connections. And I have the connections off the manifolds on the T engine I bought, so this part should be easy. However, the throttle linkage is a little different. The sporto linkage drives a doohickie. Here's a picture of the T engine: ![]() I believe the MFI one gets mounted on the other side. So I will still be missing the piece to drive this thing. ![]() So John, if you could take a picture of the outboard drivers side throttle body, it may help me see how this thing works. Also, whaddup John! I've been reading some of your posts in the engine section. I am learning more from your posts than some of the classes I've had! You may have missed your calling. ![]()

Unfortunately my camera doesn't have any macro capability.

Thanks John. It looks like all the sporto stuff has been removed already. I think I have it figured out though. We'll see!

I had a friend with an MFI Sporto (the car has been sold). From all I heard, the engine and tranny share the same oil which was the one major flaw. So, what I'm asking is are there 2 oil pumps?

Yup, there are 2 oil pumps. One circulates the oil from the tank, through the sporto, back to the tank. It is driven from the same cam that drives the MFI pump. Here's a picture of it on a T engine:

![]() Somehow on the MFI engine there is a way to drive both. In the 3 picture series in my post above, the 1st image is the back of the oil pump. The middle is with the MFI drive pulley attached, and the last is with some sort of housing.
