1968 911 Battery Question

First time poster so pardon any fopa's. I'm restoring a 68 (will try to get pictures posted) and almost done. I can't find any of the battery components though or the correct size battery. Does anyone know what new battery is of the small size to fit in the battery tray. Pelican and others say the original battery is NLA. If you know a good source for the tray and battery cover also that would be great. Thanks.

'68 had one battery (as opposed to 2 smaller ones in '69).

OEM part will be hard to find (and expensive)

You're not going to win any concourse but a Duralast Gold 51R-DLG will work. It's a smaller sized battery (compared to a regular size car battery).
I'm holding it in place with a OEM battery strap.

If you can't find battery components here on pelicanparts, http://www.************* carries cable ends, ground straps and battery straps for the '68 model.

Thanks and whites a great color

I went to the website on your reply and if that's your 911 on the website then our tastes are the same. Mines painted the carrerra or grandam white, and I painted the fuchs black and polished the flats. It looks like yours is the same. I'll check out the battery. Thanks again.

Yup, that's my car. Color is light ivory.

It's currently wearing a steel 'S' bumper but I'm looking to swap it out for the non-S item.

Which model S,T etc. are you restoring?

Cheers,

Mine was originally a European model (there was no 911 'T' or 'S' in '68 for the US) so it never had the side marker lights, smog equipment etc.

We should start a "post your 68 pictures" thread. I'd love to see all the different options of 68's. It seems to be an ususual year for Porsche. At least that's what it seemed when I was trying to find parts.

So the 68 could of come with or without the side markers? or did they all have them and mine were somehow removed during the years?

The DOT required side marker lights at the last second for the 1968 model year.

In order to be able to import the 911 in 1968, Porsche had to do some modifications: Added side marker lights, added smog equipment (which was basically a cam driven pump that blew extra air into the exhaust gas).
The 911S didn't meet US emission standards, even with the air pump, so there was no 911S in the US for 1968.

There are a couple more 1968 only parts, like the door pockets etc.

And note they're not "lights" per se, just reflectors--yellow front, red rear (at least, I have no wires running to mine!). They come up on evil-Bay from time to time. Don't know if Stoddards or someone else might have them--never had to look. But they do make for easy identification of a '68. With the way they are mounted, the original fenders would have been drilled.

And not meaning to hijack, but does "anyone" still have the smog equipment on their 68?

Yes, they are only reflectors, just like the section of the rear lens right next to the tailight.

To tell you the truth, if I ever have my car redone in the future, the reflectors will go......but they are fine for now.

I like to see those reflectors on the cars - it screams US 68! Always in favor in distinguishing birth marks.
