Expensive to change 2nd. gear sychro ?
There is a SC I my be interested in, but the owner says second gear is difficult to get it into gear and that it is the sychro. Is that an expensive fix and does the entire tranny need to be rebuilt ?
Thanks in advance. Levon ![]() |

The trans might need an adjustment, new coupler bushings or a rebuild. Hard to say. Is only difficult to get into gear or does it grind when trying to put into gear? How old is the trans oil and what's in there?
If you have to remove the tranny for a replacement of the syncro, be prepared to find that it could be the gear and not a syncro, then expect you should put in a new clutch and resurface the flywheel etc, etc. It will require an engine/tranny drop. That alone is 2 to 3 hours each for removal and then replacement at whatever shop rate. Trans repairs on average, and not a full rebuild can run from2 to 4 g's depending on what you need. Get the car inspected by a reputable mechanic and get some experienced advice. Post the general area and you should get a suggestion on where the car should be inspected. There is more than just the trans to worry about and you want a good evaluation of the entire car.

I just had my tranny rebuilt. My problem was a liitle more severe, Nut came off the main shaft and it punched through the casing. I had to get a used cover, also replaced fisrt gear, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. $2,650.00 for trans work, $650.00 for pulling the trans, $600.00 for a clutch kit. $3,900.00 if my math is right. Obiviously yours would be a little cheaper.
The trans will also be very diffcult to shift into the gears with the replaced synchros for the first 1000 miles. Hope this helps. Good luck. KevinS
