Found my car after 2 years of looking!

Well I already posted another thread asking questions about my car but here is the introduction!

It's a 1970 911T with RS flares, stock 2.2 with Webers, new Koni shocks, aftermarket sway bars front and rear, and a fiberglass '72 S front bumper. The car has about 210K on it right now and all of the records back to the new purchase in Fairfax, VA were included. A mostly complete original tool kit and jack also came along with it. I can't figure out how the jack works though (just in case).

In the late 1980s the flares were welded on and filled using brass as well as the color changed from red to a color called Mink Grey. They completely stripped the tub down for the repaint and I can't find red paint anywhere. The flags (unfortunately) were added as well as blacking out all the window trim at that time. The wheels are 15x7s and 8s with 205/50s in front and 225/50s in the back. It has been converted to a 915 transmission and the receipt said it was from a 1982 SC. It shifts very well, much better than some cars I've had in the past!

So far I have ordered quite a few parts from our host, mainly tune up parts and replacement pieces. About half of the parts showed up yesterday and everything else should be here this week. The mirrors will be replaced by a set of Durants from that order so if anyone wants to buy a set of decent flags let me know (left power right manual)

I don't know if the engine has ever been rebuilt but it doesn't smoke at all and the compression is 160 to 165 on all cylinders. The aftermarket sway bars need some work as the right rear mount is missing the bushing and looks to be broken. The front mounts will also need some help.

Here's the list of parts I ordered off the top of my head.

1970 T tune up kit (plugs, points, filters, valve cover gaskets, etc.)
Feeler gauge for the valves with extra blades
Bushings for the front sway bar (more on that later)
Durant Mirrors
Steering Wheel hub extension (to be returned because I thought the wheel was a Momo, it's a Nardi Personal)
Shifter bushings
Stainless DOT brake lines
Hood Shocks
Knobs for the window cranks
Jack Pad
Pulley Wrench
Carb Synchronizer

Oh and the PO included a new Recaro SRD with the slider but I haven't put it in. The SRD looks a little modern for the car but it does feel like a great seat. Eventually I'd like to install a set of BF Torino Monte Carlos. The paint on the car is decent but it does have road rash as well as some fading on the rear decklid. I'm going to keep my eye out for a duck that I can get painted and put on while the decklid is repainted, then I can swao back and forth. My brother is sending two old mufflers from his '71 S for me to experiment with, one is stock and the other has the pipes coming out of the center.

The original interior color was black/tan. The only parts still tan are the seat (to be changed anyway) and the door panels.

Should I just dye the tan part black or are these worth something to someone in tan? I thought about recovering them in black leather as well.

Very nice. AFA as the black/ tan combo, how does this look? GTS seats, too.

Milt those do look nice! The belts are cool as well, I'm debating whether to convert to a set of inertia reel belts. The aircraft style is cool and I do have arms like an orangutan so reaching stuff in the car isn't a problem. I've never had fixed seats before, did the fact that they don't tilt bother you much?

i'd been goin' nuts had my car been missin' for 2 years!

seriously, sweet '70...great year and an absolutely beautiful color. if i wasn't going to track the car, don't think i would personally care for fixed seats. i only like them in dedicated track cars, but that's a subjective thing anyway..ymmv.

Too bad somebody cut the speaker holes in the past. There are guys who would give a lot for those tan waffle pattern door panels. I'd say don't dye 'em...Nice car. My first 911 was a '70 T...
Glad to see yours end up in caring hands.

Ryan- Thank you for the reply and congrats on your purchase as well! My dad has the bug again (he bought a 1974 Targa new back in the 70's) and wants to find a car like yours! I think it'll be quite a while before I do a DE this car, it needs to be freshened up before doing that.

I definately need new tires, I met up for the SOCG run this morning to meet everyone but I didn't want to risk it on old SP8000s. I know the OE size is much larger than what I have on the car now (205/50R15 F and 225/50R15 R). The rear size definately throws off the speedo but the fronts are my main concern. The front of the car is very low and I don't think the 50s look right. I looked into going up to a set of 16x7s and 8s but I think I'd have to lay out $500 or so and then buy tires on top of that. So I'm thinking about 205/55R15s in front and 225/50R15s in back, just taking the aspect ratio up a bit in front to get more clearance. What was the stock size? Something like 195/70R15s in front and 215/65R15s in back? Oh and as we all know it's a pain to find performance 15" tires, I am going with the BfGoodrich G-force Sport.

I like that color! Very nice. I also like your plan to back date (?), redate (?), uh, put back to vintage idea. The Durant mirrors will be a big improvement but beware. The recent copies can be of very poor quality and they can have razor sharp edges. I would look at them carefully.

Thanks for the tip Bob, I'll be sure to really check them out before mounting. I definately don't want something with poor build quality. I've also thought about Talbot mirrors but I'm not sure how they would fit or look.

They can also be found in black if I was going to stay with that theme.

Almost everybody has black. I think the tan looks awesome. I say keep them as is.

Well, other than the fact that the originals were chrome I'm not sure. They may just be '70 handles painted black. Are there other differences between later handles and '70 handles I can look for?

I wouldn't mind keeping the tan interior except that the door panels are the only thing that is still tan. The car used to have tan carpet but that was replaced with a gray/black carpet kit recently, the rear panels were changed to black and the rear seats are black. So really I need to find someone who really wants tan panels and wants to trade. I've thought about going the RS route but I'm not sure if the lack of an armrest would be a pain in the butt.

Oh and my tach bounces a bit. Of course I did a search and found a wealth of information about alternators, VRs, grounding straps and points. Some of you guys will laugh about this but this 911 is one of my first cars with a distributor and the first with carbs! Everything else has used coil on plug or direct fire ignition. I found a bunch of posts from Grady, early S man, and DarrylD on both subjects. Looks like I have a lot to learn.

Alex (PRE-H20) warned me about "while I'm in there" -itis. Apparently it runs rampant around here...

What a beautiful car. Whenever I see a nice longhood I just know that one day I will have one myself.

That color is fantastic.

blueside..i'll be sure to let you know when she goes on the classifieds..just trying to find the time to get the write-up on the car in order. is he in cali and interested in a '74 coupe?

stock, base tires were actually 185/70/15 if i recall correctly..imagine that? all the way around..must have looked like they were rolling on dinner plates.. my car has been running 215/60/15's all around, all-season as it's a daily driver and i've had no rubbing issues, no need to roll fenders. my next set might have been 205's all the way around though - 215's are the limit i think on 15x6 wheels.

Thank you guys for the compliments I really appreciate it. I probably look like I slept with a hanger in my mouth ever since I picked the thing up!

Ryan-
Ah well I was referring to your latest purchase, the 964. He is up in Washington state and wants to have something with "real" HVAC.

I've got to say, if I was looking for an early car to start with that your car is what I would look for. Save for a few cosmetic details (easily fixed) it looks really nice.

Cheers

BlueSideUp,

Good looking longhood! Congratulations on the find. Is this the car recently advertised on Craigslist? If so, I could kick myself for not jumping on it, but glad it wound up in good hands if it's the one. I live in Capo Beach and would love to see you do a "drive-by" sometime. By the way, I've got a clean, original 75S your dad may like to see--I, too, have the itch for a longhood.
Best of luck on a great car.
