A little help - what is this and should it be whistling? (I doubt it)

Its in the trunk, just to the left of the battery and in front of the gas tank (when looking into the trunk from the front of the car).
I'm getting a high-pitched whistle from it, which I'm guessing is not a good thing.

I think that is the motor for your front condenser..
I could be wrong though..

The black case is the AC condenser fan. I believe is should only run when you are running the AC system. There is an opening behind the front bumper and another below the fan to get air on the condenser. It is easy to remove and try to find the noise. If I recall there are only 4 screws that hold in down and the wiring connector.

Maybe it's the alarm? I was out for a drive with a friend of mine and his started to whistle too, we pulled in to his driveway to figure it out and it turned out to be the alarm.

It is definitely the AC Condensor fan. It is also the fairly well known cause of front end fires in our 911s - when the motor burns out/stalls and overheats - it catches fire.
To determine if it is the cause of the whistling, just disconnect the harness connector. I wouldn't expect this is your noise, unless you happen to be running your AC.

Edit: Could your whistling noise be coming from the fuel pump instead?

Thanks all. I've disconnected the harness connector for safety sake and will investigate in the next few days. I'm guessing it IS the AC condensor fan, which would explain why I was getting air through the center vents recently. I think the AC dial may have been inadvertently turned on, explaining the air flow.

AC Condenser fan, mine's doing the same thing. It's an easy swap. Pelican has em. I did not know they ignite and catch fire.
