Hot Fuse To The Fuel Pump.
my fuel pump (FP) has been acting up. it makes different sounds and the car has been cutting off. it only seems to do it when i come to a stop, but it starts right back up. so before dropping $250 for new FP, i wanted to check all the electrics first because i new the PO did some "re-wiring". little did i know how much and how bad it was! anyway, i was letting the FP run for a while yesterday, and when i ran my hand over the fuse block i could feel the heat from the fuse. i cleaned the wires to the fuse and the fuse block hoping it would help. nope. just drove down the street and the same thing. got back and the fuse was very hot for only running about 10 min. the FP did not sound bad at all yesterday, of course while up on stands. i am guessing the FP is drawing too much current making the fuse hot, but i cant figure why it only seems to cut off when stopping, i dont want to drive it too far and get stranded.
a few years ago i ran over a BIG rock and it put a big dent ( about 1/2 inch deep, but over a big area) in the tank. is there something in the tank that could keep the FP from getting fuel, thus making the sound the FP makes change? i have looked in side, the tank looks very clean. i can see the filter, it looks like it is cocked sideways against the Fuel reservoir. actually the reservoir may be cocked so it is against the filter. when i say reservoir, i am talking about this big "donut" looking thing, and in the middle, the filter sticks up. here is my wire hack wows if you want to read. first, there is a second engine harness that is being used to run the car. it is direct wired to the fuse block on the relay panel. so, the FP runs all the time because the switch in the AFM is bypassed of course. second, the relay socket for the FP MAY have been replaced with maybe a 78. there are more wires coming out of the socket than what is shown on my diagram. 3 are cut. one of them is the one to the WUR and other components on the engine. it hot and not taped! the other is the one from the AFM. and the 3rd is also hot and not taped. i think this one is used for the 78. the rest of the wires from the socket have been cut and recrimped. the 2 wires to the fuel tank sending unit are melted. ( i think there use to be 3) i traced them back as far as i could and cut out the burned stuff. put in new wires but had to run a new ground from the sending unit to make it work. i am still a bit worried why these melted. the sending unit ohmed 0 and 67 ohms- full/empty. there are some more cut wires and spliced wires, but i have not traced them all out. i think the wire harness will have to come out and/or a lot of disassembly to fix it right. people that do things like this should be shot! stop hacking up these cars! somebody has done a lot of work on this car that did not know what they were doing. the biggest thing i have found so far is the cams were timed 15 deg. advanced making it run like crap. i think this is why a lot of this was done, they were trying to fix problems they made.

fuel pump current is 7.7 Amps. anyone know what it should be?
i am leaning towards a fuel tank problem. it seems to do it mostly when stopping. thinking about the damage to the tank, i am wondering if the filter broke off and something is blocking the pickup tube to the fuel pump. anyone know of a cutaway of a fuel tank? has anyone removed the plug on the bottom of the tank? if so, what does it let me see?
