My interpretation of the fuse panel upgrade
I decided that the time has come to get rid of the old style ceramic fuses that kept popping out on me and go with the newer ATO fuses so I have been working on rebuilding parts of my wire harness as I was getting a ghost in the machine so to say I would adjust my mirrors and my wipers would take a sweep same with the windows and it would seem that it was getting worse. I suspected grounding problems were the culprit but I wanted to clean up my fuse panel as well and cull out the dead wiring from 25 years of tinkering so this where I am starting

This should be an interesting project...
What else are you doing to your car?? |
More pics along the way

Wiring the panel
Here are pics of wiring up the panel used 6 inch pigtails to tie in factory harness much thanks to Fred Cook for sending me his info I just had to modify it to a 76 harness there are some changes.

Looks like a neat approach to your problem. I have not had the bad experiences with the factory type fuses like you have had. One thing I did find a PITA, was locating the yellow fuses in the past, but a stop a Wallyworld one day took care of my Porsche fuse problem for years to come. This is due to them deciding to clearance out the European Fuse Kits for $0.50 a pack, so I bought all they had. Good luck!!
|
Thanks I have done all the required maint. on the factory fuse blocks keeping them straight burnishing the contacts I used the new glass style fuse but it just needs to be updated and now that they have fuses with an led to tell you what fuse is blown well I had to. But in all honesty I needed more circuits as I add more bells and whistles like I am going to add keyless entry something that not many 76 911's had but I seem to have holes in the stock mounting location so who knows. I have an intresting idea for the actuating arm from the solenoid that wont break and is adjustible and uses throttle linkage parts.

About halfway
Got about halfway soldering in the wiring and testing as I go having to correct some electrical gremlins as I go.

It was a heck of a deal!!!!

Finished soldering up the majority of wires the rest will have to wait until car is almost finished. I still need to make up a panel to hide and protect the wiring below the panel and when it gets here I will make up a panel out of brushed alu. for around the fuse blocks. Now I get to continue on around tightening up the harness as I go.

Does the 76 have all the irritating jumpers behind the original fuse blocks? That part really got me when I did my project...

Yes it does like your panel looks nice covers up all the wires under the panel clean install.
|
fuse blocks
what was the source of the fuse blocks?
|

the blocks are 30 amp sockets had to put 1 inch spacers on the back of the panel because the wires extend out the back. |
Fuse Panel Upgrade
gsmith660, it looks like you did a fine job on this. I know how hard it is to work your way through the bird nest of wiring. It really does look like a great conversion, if you are experiencing fuse panel problems. A+!!!SmileWavy

Thanks, now the load is spread out I had some of my addons in the wrong place and bunched up as far as load goes now stereo and alarm are each on a separate circuit the batt + for the stereo has emf shielding for ignition whine supression it will look much better when I get the aluminum and mke the face plate up.
|
Looks great so far!!
Kroggers, I like the layout! Nice and clean, almost Ikea like!!! |
Hi gsmith660,
Stupid question, did you buy the pigtails as well or make those up yourself? If you bought them, where did you get them? I didn't see them on the site you referenced for the fuse blocks. Thank you, |
No I made all 58 or so. I crimped and soldered the spades on the wires then shrink tubed the spade conn. and then shrink tubed the blue shrink tube with smaller tube to one prevent the blue from coming off the spade and to to add some strain relief to the wire by not allow to radical a bend hence the 1 nich spacer on the fuse block.

Got a new mounting panel fabbed up out of 1\8 inch alu. to also protect the wiring paint is drying and will install tomorrow with pics
|
All installed and tested this is the finished product.

Looks great! Nice work.
|
wow! Excellent job! very nice and clean, and with purpose as well. Well done!
|
Looks really good. I like the way you have managed to ensure the cover still works.
|
Yes - Awesome job! This thread has inpired me to take my required repair of my CDI box (replacing Bosch unit with MSD) to the next level and make a new panel for that area.
Thanks! |

Just thought I would give an update since several have inquired, it's been 2 years since this was installed and have had no issues all my gremlins went away except my wiper gremlin and I am thinking it has to be an internal issue so I will live with it until I need to replace it.
|
bump for a cool idea. Im not doing this right now but it sure will be on the list.
|
Very nice work! Wish the factory did this back then!
