Post 1988 Coupe purchase

What a day. I think I finally purchased my dream car. I say think because I hope to get a PPI done tomorrow.

The car in question is a 1988 black on black coupe. Front and rear spoilers, upgraded stereo.

The guy I'm purchasing it from is about 55 years old and hardly ever drove it. He is the second owner and has had it for 5 years. He even has the original window sticker. It has 19070 miles. The car is flawless. It seems very tights, shifts very easy, and not a bit of smoke.

Every thing about this car looks brand new. The trunk looks like it has never even seen a bag of groceries.

I assume I should still get the PPI done. Anything else I should check?

Thanks for any info.

Mark!

The only other thing to make sure you have is the guys phone number so I can call and buy the car if you don't! Good Luck and welcome to the club!

sounds great. What a find. Almost wouldn't want to drive it with such low mileage. Next thing you know, you'll want an SC beater to drive daily b/c you'll feel guilty piling the miles on the relic 88!

Best of luck with the PPI.

I would get an inspection prior to buying. If the miles are what you describe, that is less them 1500 mile a year. The car may of been sitting for long periods of time to average this. Is that bad? I really don't know but I have read that a car not being run often is not good. Unusual mileage should always be checked. On the up side, 87 to 89 coupes are great cars and you will love it. Best of luck.

89, I hope you don't mean "great cars" to the exclusion of other years? Jack and "black beauty" might be out to get you. I, and the lil' 912E, unfortunately lack the requisite HP to justify getting angry.

Watch the valve guides ... the Carreras that have sat seem to be more likely to have a problem ... I bought an 88 with 23k miles in 1998 that had worn guides, although not so bad they needed to be replaced. I know of an 88 with 6000 miles that needed the guides replaced. On the other hand, the 88 I just bought has 29k miles and the guides are fine. If the valves sound noisy, pay attention ...

How much did you get the car for? Sounds like a real find.

Hey, I sure won't debate the fact that a G50 Carrera is a great 911. And black-on-black coupes, well, there's really no improving on that!

The valve guides on the late model 3.2 are strange in problems. I spoke to my mechanic, (Dave, do you know Andy B?) His opinion is that they are either ok or inferior when made. If your car has inferior guides it can go at 6000, 20,000 or some low milage number. My car has 60,000 miles on it and this is always in the back of my mind, since I beat the hell out of it at the track. I have seen no signs of the problems. I guess I got a good batch of guides?

Question

There seem to be many confirmed cases of premature valve guide wear on late model 3.2's. While I have no empirical data, it does sound as if the problem is significant. I wonder what it would take to get a "good-will" repair from Porsche?
Perhaps Porsche should address this, and make amends to the unfortunate few.
... and then I wake up

Question

I read something interesting on another BBS (mechanic's technical) the other day.

It seems that a few shops were perplexed after replacing valve guides on some late 3.2's and 3.6's like clockwork every 10,000 to 15,000. They figured out that water/moisture had gotten into the computer on all of them and caused a rich running condition. This caused the oil to be blown off the guides due to the higher than normal fuel flow. This left the guides essentially unlubricated, owing to the failure.

Thought it was interesting, even if it is or is not a correct hypothesis.

Nick.

I believe what you read was a mis-quote from Bruce Anderson. He wrote in the Excellence Tech notes 2 about a friend who was servicing a an Audi 5000. It kept coming back for valve jobs every 13k miles.
-"One day it was sitting in the shop idling, and all of a sudden it started running rough, and was obviously very rich. They checked the CO mixture and found it was running 13%... there was water in the engine management computer that was causing the intermittent rich condition and caused the valve and valve guide failure... Tom suggested that perhaps there is an injection problem limited to just those cars (3.2) that is causing some of them to go rich, resulting in excessively worn valves and valve guides"
