I have read through the numerous threads about the headlight relays and the upgrade issues. I am in a pickle with this! I have become caught in the trap of none working headlights, and I have purchased all new parts for my 911 SC "83" head light system (switch, lights, & turn signal). Before I install them and turn them to toast, can anyone send me a working schematic and instructions to install the relay system to protect my wiring and sanity.
Thanks.... |

the only reason to use a relay is if you are using 100W bulbs. they tend to melt the hi/lo switch over time. use a standard 4 terminal relay. 30=hot w/key on,85=from h/lite fuse, 87=to headlites, 86= ground.

The High /Low switch does seem to be a weak point with these cars. replaced mine a year ago.
I have an 86 Carerra with stock sealed beams (old style) are they 100Watt? I seem to remember Warren going over the weaknesses of this headlight system and fitting of relays, you may want to use the search link at the top of the page and see what turns up!Hope this helps rgds Ben |

Stock US headlights are 55/60.
Very low stress on the factory wiring system. The factory didn't just forget to put in a relay, its not there because it is not necessary with stock lights. It sounds like you have had some kind of problem with your system. If that is the case, I'd recommend solving the problem, rather than patching it with an unnecessary relay. The relay is just a band-aid. It won't hurt, but it also won't properly correct whatever problem you have that caused the failure in the first place. |

Thnaks Guys,
I am replacing the lights with 60 watt H4s. I have had other issues with the electrical system. The PO seemed to have a lot of after market things done to this vechicle. Most of the work has not been done very professionally. So I am going to install the relay system to be sure I get a good solid light system. Thanks for the info guys, your are great. Thanks |
