Many of you into motorcycles may have already heard about this:
http://world-wide-glide.com/ Porsche has been doing engine R&D with H-D for several years now. It looks like a Porsche-designed engine may finally hit the market, likely in 2003, which is H-D's 100th anniversary. As a Harley owner since 1980, I'll be watching this very closely. ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |

Well, they have the prices up into the insane region already, A few Porsche parts should help out the cause a little. No such things as a $25,000 motorcycle.

You remember the outcry when Porsche went water-cooled? You figure out the rest.

911racer,
I'm thinkin' along the same lines as you. Riding my 5th Harley since 1980, and I like 'em air-cooled just like my Porsche, thank you very much. But then again, that's just my dinosaur mentality shining through. ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |

But then, while we're pissing and moaning about it, let's think about the upside, okay? A water cooled engine has a lot of advantages over an air cooled one. Power and reliability being the two most prominent. In this day of modern technology there is some pretty cool stuff you can do with water cooling and innovative combustion chamber design. Just for a reality check, see if you can find a way to take a ride on a late model Japanese liter bike. Get a sense for the amazing amount of power those things produce. Then consider how nice it might be to have that kind of power come from a Harley-Davidson right off the showroom floor. Is that really a bad thing? H-D has made millions of air cooled motorcycles. Most of 'em are still around, and if you like 'em, you can still have one. The aftermarket will be supplying air cooled motors for a long, long time. The air cooled motor is not dead, just being overtaken by water cooling. That is progress just the same way overhead valves overtook flatheads and the way overhead cams superseded overhead valves. Technological progress is an easy thing to poo-poo, until you're actually had a taste of it." ---- wow, reading that article sounds like i'm reading an article about the Porsche 996. it's spooky really. obin |

Yeah, look at it from the back cylinder's point of view. I bet it would vote on water cooling. It's been in hell for about 50 yrs.

Robert, as an "old" Harley guy, I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.
The rear cylinder of a Harley motor actually runs *cooler* than the front. Why??? (no smart-ass comments from you riders of Riceburners out there, please).... the direction the flywheel rotates flings more oil on the rear cylinder than the front, therby cooling it more. Like a Porsche flat-6, the Harley V-twin is as much oil-cooled as it is air-cooled. And as Paul Harvey sez: "Now you know the *rest* of the story". ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |
