Won't start? Slam the door!

I've been having intermittent starting problems with my 85 carrera whenever the starter gets too hot. Moral of the story is that the starter gets too hot and the resistance gets too high for the solenoid/relay to engage. I know for sure my case is the starter- I finally placed an order once the price dropped to 100 bucks. I'll share a few things I've learned over the past couple months to help some folks out who don't feel like replacing their starter just yet: (I ran into ALL these problems/scenarios before I finally gave in) Honestly, I should have replaced the starter after encountering the first scenario/problem. To give you an idea of the time frame, the first scenario dates way back to about a 1 year and a half ago and the last scenario (4) happened last night so it's been an on-going issue.

1. Make sure you adjust your valves correctly- otherwise if the valves are too tight the cylinder head will get too hot and heat up the engine/ engine compartment thus preventing it from starting.
2. Don't run the A/C. It heats up the engine compartment.
3. Careful with the heat. I think one of the heating tubes runs right by the starter and will head it up if it's left on.
4. Avoid idling or cruising along at slow speeds. ie trying to find a place to park on a crowded downtown street.

Finally the BEST advice ever- if you can crawl under your car and hit your starter with something hard it'll help. If you can't crawl under (most likely) just give your door a really hard SLAM!!! Works like a charm everytime!!!

If that still doesn't work, find someone to help you push start it. If you can't find anyone walk home and come back tomorrow. It will start once it cools off.

Moral of the story buy a new starter ASAP- it's only a 100 bucks.

picked up a mini starter for $125. Seems to run well so far, though it makes contact with the flex tubing for the heat on that side...

mini starter? What is that? Can you expand a little more on this? Do you mean the starter from a mini cooper?
