Anyone in/near NNJ with a 3.2 Available this Weekend??

Hello All,

My '85 911 has been having an issue where it won't go above 1500rpm after it warms up. Sometimes this takes 5 min, sometimes it takes 30 min. I have done a lot of diagnostics, and replaced all the sensors that I thought could have been the cause with no luck.

I am pretty sure that the motronic box has a specific capacitor/resistor/solder joint that is failing after the circuitry warms up. I am planning to send it out for service, but would like to confirm that this is indeed the problem before I send it out. The easiest and most definitive test for this is a swap with a known good unit.

If anyone in the area with a similar 911 3.2 (motronic version 3.1, I believe) can spare a few hours this weekend to do a quick swap, that would be awesome. Since the issue happens quickly after startup, this would likely involve you coming to me, and going for a short drive in my car until the issue occurs, then performing a quick swap to confirm the issue. Weather looks decent, my location is near I-80 exit 27.

Reward offered will be a couple of beers, and/or a bottle of tasty homemade jalapeno hot sauce should you prefer.

HI Paul,

I have been doing some searching on that this morning...I will see if I can confirm an answer to that question with some more searches, or maybe a separate post.

I am pretty sure that as long as the version of motronic is the same, the car will run, though probably not perfectly. About a year and a half ago myself and some other pelicans swapped a 3.2 euro engine from an 84 with a 3.2 US from an 87. The car ran off the other motronic and chip ok, and the harness was the same, etc.

And yes, you are a bit far...if this ends up working out I will certainly offer to fill your tank. Thanks for your response.

The harness to the motronic does not change with different versions of the chip, so you can freely swap computers for your diagnostic purposes. If I understood correectly, the 28 pin has denser (higher resolution) fuel and spark maps. I think it runs a bit smoother, as a result.

The 28 pin eeprom may be added to an earlier computer, too. I had this done by Steve Wong.

Thanks Doug, that is what I thought.

Paul, thanks for your offer. I will PM you or post here tomorrow if I don't hear anything from other pelicans, and you are still willing to try to meet briefly saturday to do the quick swap.

I am hoping that someone else will eventually chime in, since there are bound to be quite a few folks that are closer...I would be willing to wait and do it on another day or weekend if someone else would volunteer to save you the trip.

For those that may be reading for information purposes, here is another thread I found with some comments about motronic compatability.

Local in NNJ

I'm in NNJ (just off rt 80 - exit 35 - near Rockaway mall) and I just removed my underseat box for SW chip install.

Sounds like this might work for you. We could even check it out w & w/o the SW chip.

My brother lives just south of Drakesdale Road off Rt. 206 & I was going over there this weekend anyway!

PM me if you're interested.

BTW, my car is an '87 w. later-style (4K) 24 pin chip.

Perfect!!!

I actually have a sw chip as well, and with/without the chip does make a difference, especially with alternate exhaust. Anyway, we can talk about that later.

I will PM you with my address and cell #, and we can set something up for this sat/sun, whatever works for you.
