Starter Pinion Replacement

Does anyone know how to replace the pinion on the starter?

This is one of Wayne's Hi-Torque units...

I know the shaft has to be pulled out and then clamped, but am unclear on the steps after that.

Thx.

Pelican tells me that IMI Performance Products makes the ones they sell. I have no idea if it uses Nippon Denso or Hitachi parts...

For $27 ( << new starter cost), IMI supplied me with a pinion gear, a spring and two other parts, but I'm not sure how to do the replacement.

That is definitely a Denso style pinion. To install it you remove the nose from the starter (2 bolts from the back, two screws from the front), remove the idler gear being careful not to lose the balls from the open cage bearing, then push the starter drive out of the starter nose. A ball may drop out of the center of the hollow starter drive shaft. Don't lose this either.

Use a phillips screwdriver inserted into the hollow shaft of the starter drive to push the pinion shaft forward, this will allow you to push the pinion down on the shaft (straight splines) to reveal the snap ring that holds the whole assembly together. Remove the ring and the pinion will slide right off the end of the shaft.

Reassemble with a new snap ring and retainer

Thanks - I wound up taking it to a starter place - they did it for $20 while I waited. That will help others tho.
