My brother owns an 1986 audi coupe 4 cly which has started dumping oil into the air filter. neither of us can figure out what might cause this? i vaugley remember something about a broken piston ring causing such symptoms but am not sure if my immagination! any pointers you guys can give will be much appreciated. as an aside my front wheel bearing collapsed today (ouch). i will let you know how i get on with replacement. ------------------ mike 87 coupe' |

Not too familiar with Audi's, but I'll give it a shot since noone else has so far.
Is the car a turbo? If the seals on the turbo shaft are leaking, you will get oil in the intake and air filter. A broken piston ring would cause this, but you would also see some severe smoking/burning oil. What about the breather tube on the valve cover? Does it have some kind of a check valve to keep oil from running back to the intake? Or any breather type connection from the top of the engine to the intake/throttle area? Just some ideas. Your audi 4000 is suffering from blow-by, which is causing excessive crankase pressure. I assume it is a high mileage engine and your piston rings are worn. I doubt you have a cracked ring as this mostly happens with higher compression or turbo, and your audi has neither.
