911: The fastest, the best and the prettiest.
Guys,
As part of my ongoing crusade to convince obstinate detractors that the 911 is not a pseudo sports car made untameable by having its engine in the rear, I've scanned in an excerpt from an article found in a recent issue of the UK publication - 'Thoroughbread & Classic Cars'. Follow the link below to read the excerpt. http://www.holscope.com/74Carrera2.7/track_classics_carrera3.0.jpg Basically, the article evaluated ten sports cars they felt would make the perfect track day weapons. Below is a list of some of the cars that made their short list for evaluation: Ferrari 308 GTS QV BMW M3 - 4cyl Lotus Europa Twin Cam Lotus Cortina But is this excerpt telling some of us who have raced 911's things we don't already know?! Who in their right mind would ever call the 911 a "pseudo sports car?"

Ahem, to be read with all the usual disclaimers about owning one......despite stating the contrary the writer must be biased having expended time and $$$ buying his car.
It is a very good article though (I mean the whole thing, not just the 911 bit). Cam [This message has been edited by CamB (edited 03-27-2001).] |

Man, you'd be surprised how many people think the 911 is less than what its history might suggest. Actually, Vic Elford, in his book, 'Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook', called the 911 the most maligned car ever produced. It's true; when I tell non-Porsche-driving car enthusiasts (who should know better) that I sometimes take my car to the track, I get this blank look of incomprehension in return, and sometimes, even a snide little remark like: "You're obviously a glutton for punishment." Hmmm, thats interesting. Not trying to argue with you, but I want to put in my opinion...
Wouldn't you think that some of the challenge of being a good track (or any sort) of driver would be to gain the ability to handle a "maligned" car in any high performance type situation? I see alot more challenge in holding a 930 from oversteering on a hairpin at 80mph than in falling asleep with boredom while you take a 300ZX thru the same turn. I have always felt that a "true" sports car is one that takes driving to a new level in the fact that it takes the judgement and skill of the driver to manage and control the car. The maligned 911 certainly demands this! Just my $0.02, but I'm no automotive analyst or experienced racer. Nick,
I've never raced a 930, but from my own experience racing my 911, I can confidently say it's not as demanding to Hot Shoe it as those who have made the 911 so maligned would probably believe! Sure, you've got to wash off speed in as straight a line as possible to make sure the rump is settled in turns (because turn-in is so sharp in a 911), but otherwise, my 911 is extremely forgiving, and with all that traction, very reassuring out of turns. If I remember correctly, Vic Elford also stated something like, "In the hands of a competent driver, the 911 can do things almost impossible for other cars." Not a direct quote, but something like that!
