Can you adjust valves in a SC w/ AC compressor in place?
Looking for opinions. I have done several valve adjustments on my 78 but always removed the AC compressor from the mounts and laid it on the fender. I have been able to get the intake valve covers off with it in place but it is TIGHT....opin ions?
This is my valve adjustment after a top end rebuild last year. It is running great nut really wanted to make sure everything was right, plus I had to tighten the main crankcase oil line...so removed the drivers side SSI's. Had a heck of a time getting the exhaust valve cover off the drivers side...may be warped...gotta get a piece of plate glass and check

for the two minutes it takes to remove the compressor's 3 bolts and set it on a blanket on the fender, it ain't worth the hassle adjusting valves with it in the way. yes it can be done.

Only for the stout of heart. The rest of us move the compressor out of the way.

Lazy is right!
Once I started last night it quickly became clear why you need it out of the way to get to #6....you just can;t easily get to or work the feeler gauge in (unless you are double jointed) from the side. And JW it took me at least 5 minutes to get the AC off...but I did remember I had switrched the 14 mm bolts to Allen heads to make them easier to remove

After fighting that thing over and over, I made a long thought-out decision to remove the entire AC system. After 12 months, I've no regrets. Reduces car's weight a noticeable amount, and the uncluttered look of the right side of the engine is also good. Heater blower and plastic S pipe on left side is easily managed. Just my humble opinion.

sig_aI agonized over this last spring as I finished the rebuild...posted a poll on here and it was a pretty even split..but the real deciding factor was my wife...this is my road car (the 73 is pretty much track only) and she likes to go for rides....so I left it in, even with a recharge of freon it is pitiful...I may remove the whole system this summer....or maybe spend a forune with one of the update kits.....who knows!
