Timing went out of spec because you changed the point gap. They are directly related. It sounds like your rotor wasn't installed correctly it needs to go down all the way and engage the little notch on the shaft. You can indeed screw the connectors on to the wires just like the old set.

Well I received some unsettling news today after finally taking the car to a pmechanic.I got him to balance carbs and do a valve adjustment. All of my head stud nuts were loose and on #4 cylinder they were sitting in the valve cover. The phtt sound was a compression leak,he feels I may be in for a rebuild but I do have a chance that the heads could seat themselves after a while. He recommended some easy driving for a while and a change to dino oil from the synthetic I have been running. The carbs issue went away with some much bigger idle jets 62 versus 55's and some tweaking with the air and mixture screws. The compression in #4 is bad when stone cold but after a warm up cycle everything seats and she runs good.I am hopeful that this is a good sign and will not have to rebuild as the previous rebuild was only 30ks ago with all the upgrades case savers/raceware studs ect.If I have to rebuild I will be doing some performance upgrades though new p and c's and cam ect.Wish me luck...
