Post BEST WEARING TIRES???

I have a 78 911 sc targa with 7&8x16 wheels, lowered. no hot dog driving, just around town & freeway. I am tired of replacing tires. What is the best wearing tier for street use. I put yokos on my mercedes and got twice as much miles as the pirellis. could this be the answer. all so cal driving.

You probably already know this, but the 'best wearing' tires are going to be made of very hard compounds and less agressive tread patterns that will make them among the 'worst handling'...perhaps OK for a Camry/Accord but not exactly what you want on your Porsche!

Just my $.02

I don't know about the log wearing, but i do know Yoko AVS Intermediates are not for you if long tire life is expected.

I also beleive you will not be able to use the z rated tires because they will generally have a soft, and thus quicker wearing, compound. Thus, you'll have to go to a lower speed rated tire.

Bruce Anderson also stated in the "Handbook" that the rear tires on SCs (although they are taking over the world ) will wear out twice as fast as the front. So no matter what tire you use, I bet you'll go through 2 rears for every 1 front.

Dunlop SP-9000 has the best tread wear rating of all of the extreme performance tires that I have come across. I was replacing BS RE71 and SO2 rears every 7-8000 mi. Dunlops now have that and still look good. They are expensive though

Question

Apart from wearing well, how are the Dunlops for driving? Good wet grip?

The Dunlops probably give up a little ultimate grip, but for street driving this is more than made up by the durability and quietness, I rarely drive in the rain with them but wet grip seems great to me, they can process a lot of water(take a good look at the tread). They do take a set and thump a bit after sitting for a few days, but every high performance tire that I have ever used does this also.

I'm sure you can find some tires at Sam's club with a 60,000 mile warranty. Do you really want these on your car. The other post are right in that you can't have it all, good handling and long wear. Check the wear ratings and use those to compare. Try Tirerack and compare the brands. I just got a set of G-Force RA1 for the track . The wear rating on those was 00 .

Jerry:

Same car as yours. I put Yokohama dB Decibels on and they seem to wear great, but I have no long-term data to give you. Certainly better wearing than the GoodYears that were on.

Dunlop SP Sport 9000's all the way around...
They stick like glue unless you are really trying to throw the ass end around... Even then they're back in line shortly.. My favorite feature is the aqua-tread.. I've been caught in bad storms twice and have been able to cruise at highway speeds while all the other cars were tatooed to the emergency lane...
FWIW..

I have Dunlop D40 M2's 215/60ZR15 on the back of my 911. I've had them for over 15,000 miles and they still have lots of tread left. They are good in the water and are very good on dry. Unfortunately they don't make these anymore but the SP-9000's are probably better anyways. This will probably be my next tire.

It's funny I haven't heard anyone talk about Michelins although there's been a lot posted about tires on this board. How about it, guys... I'm looking for something that will wear well too... the rear tires seem to go south all too soon.
regards,
jlex.

I have BF Goodrich VR4's on my 83SC.I have one DE with these, not the best track tire,
but for an everyday tire, I have to admit they have held up very well, I have over 30,000 miles and I have a good bit of tread left on the tires.

And what about that other company, you know the one without the blimp? The PO of my p-car put on a set of Goodrich Comps. I have no complaints about them yet but then again, I really don’t know how they compare to others. Should I dump these for another brand? These seem to hold up well and last for awhile.

I had BFG Comp T/A on my car when I bought it. Traction is good and wear is good compare to Dunlop, but a bit noisy. It is not noticeble with 911's engine noise. Yokohama is great tire but wear out faster.
