Cayenne based on VW
I know topics about the Cayenne are not popular but on a UK car programme last night ("Driven" on Channel 4) there was a feature, including video footage, of the new VW SUV on a test track. The highlight of the report was that the VW SUV and the Cayenne will be sharing the same platform (and parts?). In fact the VW SUV was caught and photographed at a Porsche site.
A joint Porsche / VW vehicle sounds familiar, doesn't it. Anyone else heard this rumour? |
It's not a rumor at all. The two vehicles were jointly developed, and share the same platform (like Volvos now share with Fords, and Jaguars share with Lincolns). VW is responsible for their own drivetrain and suspensions, which will make them a different animal from the P-wagons.

The Boxster does use a Passat transmission, after all...
The difference here is that VW and Porsche are separate entities while Jaguar and Lincoln are wholly owned subsidiaries of Ford (don't know about Volvo). More distressing is GM putting an Opel V6 in the new Saab... On an unrelated note, I was tailed all the way to work by a pair of bright blue Subaru WRX's. With NJ plates. What an ugly car... Note that I said they were *behind* me... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif blue ------------------ blue '81 SC Targa |

Regrettably, this is the only info I could find.
http://www.audiworld.com/bbs/a4/989/messages/2754.shtml http://www.sandiegometro.com/1998/august/roadtest.html (a fleeting reference) Perhaps I should have said "*did* use a Passat transmission". Well, back to "work". blue |
Hello
The Boxster uses an Audi transmission. Same trany is used in the new Passat generation. You will see the Audi 100 origin on the boses for the Procon ten ropes. But this is just an pay back as VW used Porsche 911 tranys in the 914 and the rally beatle. Shoking is that VW put a VW sign on the housing. Grüsse |
Isn't Audi owned by VW? I can't remember. The new Passat and the A4 do look remarkably similar though.
So who owns ZF (http://www.ZF-Group.de)? It seems like they're the REAL builders of the transmissions. I was shocked to find a VW logo on the inside of my 3-spoke steering wheel when I replaced it with a Sparco. Don't mind me...all this convoluted supply chain stuff gets my motor running. blue ------------------ blue '81 SC Targa [This message has been edited by BlueSkyJaunte (edited 03-29-2001).] |
Ok, here's my 2 cents.
VW is the 4th largest auto manufacturer in the world...maybe higher. They get this by owning MANY companies including Audi, Lamborghini, Bently, Rolls Royce, Seat, etc. I was still selling VW's when the 99 Passat came out including the "tip." trans. I was told that this was borrowed from Porsche's parts bin and not the other way around. I believe that Porsche used the "tip" long before VW got there hands on it. ------------------ Dave 1970 914-6 (soon GT) |
Hello
ZF belongs to the stock holders. Mostly other company´s or big bank´s /insurance´s. The company was founded by Mr Zeppelin witch startet to make those Big Zeppelins. After Lakehurst they focused on transmissions ( They did it allready before but for airshipusage ). An other big Company was involved with Zeppelin; Maybach.......... ZF is with Getrag ( Gleason ) the leader in transmission technology especially automatic and high tourge units other companys can´t even think about managing it. They are OEM from all car companys and work in house and out house. VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat/Bentley/Lamborghini/Lotus Engeniering/Bugatti are direct VW companys. Not to mention the indirect companys. VW is following a plattformstrategy. Each company generates one or two plattforms the others use too ( De Tomaso, ISO,...). So are all longtitutinal mountet engines Audi plattforms while the sideways mountet engines are VW teritory. Midship is right now Lamborgini and Bugatti / Bentley. All cars share the same basics but have own skins and an own philosophy. A Seat driver is normaly not a typical Audi driver. The Master or GEO from VW is Ferdinad Piech. He personaly owns 15 % of Porsche Stuttgart, est. 5% of Volkswagen and 50% of Porsche Austria. Porsche Austria owns 20% of Volkswagen and 50% of Porsche germany. Porsche austria has an much higher income then Porsche germany. The taxes from Porsche Austria finances 20% from the staate austria. Porsche allways used VW supliers as in fact Porsche foundet VW and used the same resources to make there cars. VW is not a cheap car it is high quality brand. Every old beatle or german made frontdriver reflects a piece from Porsche engeniering. VW are solid and not the fastest on the block but good cars on the long run. Made to last much longer then the other brands. But even VW had to compromise and downgrade to be competive in the class. BTW R&R is splittet away to BMW. Piech will make an Bugatti and a Bentley to flush into that market. Mercedes is reinventing the Maybach and Mr Reitzle at Ford is allready in the pits to win that race. BMW + R&R has not the best cards as most brits dislike the Rover story. Not very similar to DC. Chrysler was ruined by the american leadership while rover was butcherd from silly germans. ( Just try to find what Wiedeking said about that some years ago ) Grüsse http://www.pcapotomac.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000365.html |
