Question Boge to Koni strut ball joint question.

Dear All,

I'm changing my worn out Boge front strut for a complete Koni unit (not just the insert).
I basically got a good deal 7 the complete strut was cheaper.

OK, I have a ball joint splitter so removal of the old strut is straight forward.

Is the old A-arm ball joint re-usable or does it have to be replaced as well?

If I need a new one has anyone ever had any success in removing the nut with a C spanner?

Or is the Pelican tool the only thing that will do the job, short of making your own tool out of a large socket as posted by Warren?

Cheers, JG

Jon,

My assuption has always been that removing the strut from the ball-joint stud damages the stud and sealing 'boot' enough to require replacement. Like con-rod and flywheel bolts ... reuse doesn't seem like a good idea, given the trouble and expense of changing a ball-joint by itself! The factory service manual specifies 15 mkp or 108 lb-ft for the slotted nut.

You might want to try one of your 'larger' independent UK specialty shops like Autofarm ... they may have the P 280b 'Slotted Nut Wrench' tool a lot closer than Automotion/Performance Products! Good luck!

Cool

Thanks Warren,

You've confirmed what I thought.
Probably/maybe OK to re-use, but not worth it.

Esp. as the ball joints have seen 116K already.

At least the sun is shining.
We've had around 5 months of non stop rain.

Cheers, Jon
