Will be looking for a good quality paint sprayer to replace the Craftsman sprayer I used last summer. Just about anything should work with my 4hp compressor.
Any recommendations, guys? I was thinking that it may even be a better idea to get one where the paint pot is separate from the gun; where five feet or so of hose connects the two to allow painting at any angle. Any thoughts on a good model are appreciated. regards, jlex. |

Although they are pricey, an HVLP gun is the way to go. I have been painting cars since I was 14 for myself and others. I painted my 911T last year and painted the car (door jams included) with about a quart and a half of unreduced. They are expensive but you get your money back on the paint. As for quality, I recommend a binks for use with two stage paints. I personally have a Sata Jet which is of very high quality aswell. Just invest in a gun that will lay metallic down smoothly. good luck

What is the CFM output of that compressor? A good HVLP will require at least 9 CFM at 50 psi. I would highly reccommend a Sharpe sgf98HVLP or their platinum H.O. if you don't mind spending $280-$450. If you are looking to spend $150, a Sharpe cobalt is a great choice with a 1.5mm nozzle. A quality HVLP will spray at basically any angle you might need to, just ensure that the vent on the cup is of the non-leaking variety.(The cobalt will leak from the vent in horizontal positions) Go to www.sharpe1.com, they have an excellent informative website.

The new HVLP guns come with plastic liners that allow you to spray at an angle. Plus the clean up is much easier. You can get a good one for @ $150 at any auto paint store.

I checked my compressor last night. It's CFM output is 8.8 CFM @40 PSI and 7 CFM @90 PSI.
Is this powerful enough to handle HVLP setup? Also, I've been under the impression that HVLP was only for industrial type uses where the quality of the finish wasn't all that important. You're saying that it does a great job on cars? I guess there've been a lot of changes since I used to hang around my uncle's body shop. Unless you made a foggy mess of things, you weren't getting the finest finish. If HVLP gives a better finish, why is anyone using the old style spray gun? regards, jlex. |

Nobody is using the conventional cup guns anymore. They waste tons of paint and the finish is of a much higher quality with HVLP guns because the paint industry is constantly under pressure from the EPA. Therefore paint is tailored to spraying from HVLP guns. Your ait supply is borderline, it should work although you may have to take breaks to let the compressor catch up. I highly reccommend you go to www.sharpe1.com and post your concerns on the Doctor Gun message board. He can steer you in the right direction as to what settings to use on the gun for certain paints, what gun to use given constraints etc.
