Post How to Lose 35 HP for $4000

You read it correctly.

I called the parts locator for emission equipment in California. Got quotes for a complete system for a '78 930. $4000.
This is just nuts. US Cal 930 put out 265HP, ROW 300 HP. You lose 35 HP for $4000.

Is this a scam or are these prices right?

I moved into CA 5 years ago. My '77 non-turbo had all the emissions gear removed by a PO.

It took me about a year to figure out everything I needed then hunt down all the parts, had to put it together from several suppliers. If memory serves I spent about $500 on an air pump, air distribution rail, egr valve and some plumbing and other little details.

Then spent many hours installing the whole mess so that I could reduce HP and pass a 15 minute test

I don't know what is different on the turbo system but $4000 seems excessive. Does that include labor? I did the work myself.

Well, there are some things to think about. With the CO% set correctly, a 930 will pass the smog sniffer test. You just need to take the car somewhere where they won't care about the visual or know so little about Porsches that they can't tell. I have a stock exhaust from a 930 sitting in my garage expect that the thermal reactors have been replaced so heat is dissipated easier. I don't know if this will help you, but I want to get rid of it. I currently have no cat and a GHL system and I live on the West coast in a state which is called something that begins with a C. Don't tell anyone.

No, no, no. Sorry for the confusion. I posted a few days ago that I wanted to SELL this stuff but didn't know what it was worth. A poster (thank you) gave me the number in CA to call for such information.

Here is the parts list:

Thermal reactors, $1200 EACH (includes heat exchangers)
Air Pump, EGR System, $2500
Complete System $4000

You don't have to worry about me moving to a place like that any time soon. No smog laws of ANY kind in downstate IL yet.

I passed in GA (rolling dyno) with a '92 C2 Turbo with all emission related stuff removed.

I was at Franz Blam Racing yesterday discussing this exact issue for my latest engine (smog equipment free). They assured me that we would be able to tune the car (maybe with only one bank running), but it would pass...

I am hearing many stories of tuning 911s to pass emissions testing. This is all good news, but don't they check to see if the smog equipment is in place and functioning? I thought that was the biggest issue.
