Question driver's door grab handle- why?

This may be a dumb question, but why doesn't the driver's door have the grab handle like the passanger's door on the early 911/912?

One hand on the wheel.
One hand on the shifter.

The reason for the grab handle on the drivers side door is.... So you can hook the bungi cord around it and stretch it to the passenger side grab handle and have automatic door closers plus this will act as a lap belt. See Porsche does think of everything.

You've got a steering wheel to hang on to!

Dr Porsche doesn´t liked it. It is said he banged it aginst his knee.

I think they liked to have mor free room to wild steering action. Early 911 can need much speed on the stering wheel.

could it be that the car was originally designed to be RHD? the wipers park on the right on early cars too. i've always wondered about this.

On the RHD cars, the handle is still only on the passenger side (which used to make RHD countries good sources for LHD 'handled' driver's side armrests). The door has the threaded holes for the grab-handle extension on both sides.

Roland's suggestion about room for your hands to move most freely is probably the most plausible explanation I've heard. Although that certainly wasn't a factor in the placement of the windshield-wiper stalk, which can easily get hit accidentally while cornering. A good tip I heard is to remove the fuse for the wipers when you go to the track.

I have two or three friends who have gotten RHD door parts and now have two pull handle.

I bought RHD wiper arms and moved my wipers back to the other side on my 1971. I'm short and it gives me better vision of those little orange cones.

From what I have found there are no RHD parts avaiable here in the US, you need to find them offshore. Luck is with you guys, we have a bunch of Pelican Parters who live in RHD countrys so get someone to order parts for you.
