People that have purchased the Jacobs coil have reported both burned out coils and burned out Bosch CDI-units ... and confirmation has been recieved from Performance Products that the Jacobs coil should not be used with the Bosch CDI-system!

There is a fundamental difference between the 'coil' that Porsche calls an ignition transformer, and a conventional coil ... both the impedance and turns ratio are drastically different! The CDI ignition 'transformer' operates on 460 Volt pulses and has a turns ratio of 1:100. A conventional coil like the Jacobs operates on 12 Volt pulses and has a turns ratio of 1:3000 or thereabouts!

I bought one myself from Perf. Prods. and was afraid to install it. If you go to the Jacobs website, you will see that Jacobs states that the coil will not work with Capacitive Discharge Ignition systems. Perf. Prods. should state this in their catalog(which I recommended in a lengthy letter over a year ago), as should other companies. I think that you are going to be replacing the coil many times in the future if you use the Jacobs model. I would suggest a stock Bosch model. You really don't want to screw up your current CDI unit(as they are expensive), unless you are planning to replace it with a Permatune unit or something.

I had bought a Jacobs coil and put it in my 73S. Big mistake and as both Warren and William said, it could burn out your system. In my case, I was lucky... only the coil went. Don't use it!

Thanks for your help Warren. Performance Products needs to update their catalog to tell consumers not to use these coils with the CDI system. My ignition system is working in good order so I should have known better than to try to reinvent the wheel. Porsche uses the Bosch CDI becouse it serves the purpose and must serve it well so unless I have problems with the system Im going to leave it alone, no more aftermarket "hop up parts" for me.
