Question Gasket sealants...

I have just begun my Carrera chain tensioner install, and I was wondering if you need to use a gasket sealer,on the cam chain covers. Additionally, what is involved in re-setting the timing of the distrubutor? I will make sure the engine is at T.D.C before removing.

Thanks,

Cool

No gasket sealer on the cam housing covers.

On the distributor, set the engine at TDC. Remove the cap and you will see that the rotor points to a groove in the distributor body. Remove (a 13mm crows foot helps here, unless you already have the rear sill out!) the distributor and do your work. When you reinstall, make sure you get it pointing back at this mark at rest! It can be a little tricky as you have to insert the distributor with the rotor slightly behind the mark. As you slide it in and the gear engages it will come forward to line up. If you put it in lined up, the rotor will move forward a little and once the distributor is seated, it will not line up with the mark. Don't ask me how I know.

Good Luck.
Nick.

along with nick's directions, you can scratch a witness mark on the distributor and engine case, so when those are lined up, the timing will be the same. although the gray gaskets already have sealer on them, i've been using spray "copper coat" on both sides, letting it tack up before use, to help prevent those minor leaks that pop up occas.(a personal thing). nick's right though. they were designed to be used dry.
