What to replace clock with?-INTERESTED?
Hey All,
I have been doing custom gauges for folks in the 914 and hot rod communities for about a year and a half now. My work as a designer and gauge customizer has been shown in several publications as well. I am in the process of converting over a set of 911 gauges to V8 use and it occurred to me that the clock is kind of useless if there is one in the radio. This could be a spot for some more pertinent information. I was going to use a fuel gauge and retrofit it with a voltmeter and CHT gauge. What other types of gauges would you like to see in there? I can fit any VDO 90 degree sweep gauge in there. Anything else? I saw an SC, prepped for circuit, with a big red warning light where the clock used to be. I guessed it was for low oil pressure.

"guages? GUAGES?! We don need no steeken guages!"
just had to do it :) besides the clock hole oil press lamp, it has also been used for a ventilation duct, LED or mechanical boost guage on 930/935. Porsche used to offer an outside temp guage on the 356 and early 911, and with the trick 3 and 4 in one set ups you pictured, you can also monitor transmission temperature, put the boost there and place a small clock on the bottom of the tach |
Air/fuel mixture gauge

I always wanted a Valentine-1 concealed display mounted in the tach or in the spot where the clock goes.

there is a guy down here in the chatsworth area that does super custom deals like that. he even can take thicker rear view mirrors apart, remove the silver in one corner, and put in a radar display. There are other trick things he does too with regards to radar- best not to discuss here |
I always thought the big red light was a Shiftt light. You see it in all the racing 911's.

Picture courtesy of Plavan from this thread regarding an oil pressure light. And a Monster shift light like ErVikingo mentioned: http://performancespares.com.au/images/4299.jpg |
how about a cobalt d-pic and a valentine-1 in the same guage
|
Yup, I was wrong. Sorry guys. Its an oil pressure light.
|
Combo head temp and (2nd) oil temp guage (sender to be installed @ auxillary cooler)
|
If I was going to loose my clock it would be nice to replace it with a volt/amp rig. I have ofter wondered why the car didn't come with those from the begining.
|
probrobly because there pretty much useless to most people
|
I had Wesstach build me a head temp and battery charge gauge. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1200869489.jpg
|
I also used a Westech gauge, this one a 6-way (one for each head) selectable CHT gauge. #4 runs the hottest...

I have mine replaced with a picture of my wife.
Just joking. A clock telling me what time it is, is better than my wife telling me what time it is. |
combo volt and head temp which mimics the 911 oil press and oil temp gauge.
|
Voltmeter only. Or Voltmeter and A/F Gauge.

Hi mark,
I like your 4 in 1 guage. In my 930 k-jetronic CIS injection there are some messurements that could be usefull. 2 Fuel pressure guges 0 to 7 bar for 1.- System fuel pressure as jim posted on this thread ( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/516270-dash-fuel-pressure-gauge-cis.html ) 2. fuel injectors Pressure ( this is the presure on the upper level of the fuel distribution chamber) 3. voltimeter (of course) 4. uncertain on what could be more important. could be a) Lambda gauge (messure enrichment / the Air to fuel ratio) signal coming from O2 sensor. or b) messuring the temperature for the TURBO. posible?? nice to have this all!!! side by side ( or up and down) ....voltmeter / ammeter.
|
When I did mine I reasoned that it was far more likely to have an alternator belt, or alt. failure, so I did mine (back in 1999/2000) to light when a severe engine overheat issue was about to happen.

Ever put a voltmeter in the bottom of the tach?
Like the boost gauge on the 930. I really like the clock, I won't get rid of it as long as it still works. |
|
I vote ....
Fuel Pressure and Voltmeter |
I'd like dual AFR or a quad with dual AFR, Head temps, and Volt (or anything else useful, i just chose volt since i needed to fill that gap)
|
I love my clock! everyone who gets in likes it too. I put my voltmeter between the seats in place of the electric switch for the climate control. (SC)
|
I would rather re-locate the clock to a custom mount in the center console...and get important and immediately-useful stuff like a voltmeter and ammeter or such.... in the original clock-space....more in line of sight !
