Question Oil Pressure

From searching past threads I have learned that oil pressure should match RPM (viz., 3 at 3000 RPM). When I start my Carrera, the oil pressure goes immediately to 4-4.5 and stays there as long as the engine is running, irrespective of RPM. Is this bad? If so, whats wrong, and does it need to be fixed?

Does it stay pegged at the top or does it flucuate a little with rpm changes? I had a bad oil pressure sending unit on my 87 and it would peg at the top as soon at the engine got power and stayed there. It should run higher for a few minutes after start till the oil warms up a bit.

It just stays pegged at about 4-4.5 and does not appear to fluctuate with RPM.

I would say that there is a problem with your sender/connection. I've got the same oil readings (pegs at the top). I bought a new sender last year (after testing to make sure it wasn't the guage or connection) but have been unable to replace the unit. I've read of a few people that managed to DIY, but after several hours of head scratching I resigned the job for the upcoming year. If you don't have an A/C mount then the job is relatively easy...

The VDO guages work on a grounding ohm resistence system.

In this scenario either your sender on the engine is screwed up or the guage itself has a bad ground wire on it.

Also the bar pressure number does not exactly match the RPM. I think the thing to check for is either 3 Bar at 4000RPM or 4 Bar at 5000RPM with a warm engine, one of those two should tell the health of your oil pressure.

Good Luck,

Almost certainly the sender is defective. And, easy to change, with the right tool. I tried a borrowed 15/16 inch SnapOn crowfoot, but it didn't work - too thick. I then bought a 15/16 inch Craftsman crowfoot which is a bit thinner, and presto, did the job, without removing the AC mount. I did remove the oil Temperature sender, to provide a bit more room. You can also get a cheapie, Tiawanese 15/16 inch open end wrench, heat it, and bend it almost 90 degrees about one and one half inches from the end and do the same thing! Try it, and save yourself a trip to the dealer at $$$ per hour.

I have the craftsman crowsfoot. For some reason I was unable to get the wrench around the base of the sender. It could be the angle of the sender base... it could just be me. The car is still in storage right now, but after reading several posts on how "easy" other Carrera owners found the replacement to be, I will make another attempt later on.
I seem to be in the "just waiting to get the car out of storage so I can install all theh goodies ", mode . I'm really anxious to bolt on the GHL muffler...
