Gated ‘NON’ short shift for 901????

I just received my first car with a 5spd 901 and really like the feel. With that said I have no doubt that in a short period of time I run a good chance of hitting R when shifting 1st to 2nd.......

Are there any gated / sprung shift systems out there that increase the positive nature of the shift without shortening it and ruining the feel?

Thanks
Sam

Hey Sam,

Do you mean from 5th (top right) to 4th (middle center) and the chance of grinding it into R (straight down from 5th)?

I recently had my shifter replaced because PO glued (yes, I said glued) the R lock out on the hacked down stock shifter. I guess the retard thought cutting dwon the shaft meant it was a short shift. Any who.

My baby now has the OEM short shift with standard R lock out and wholy doo doo, I did not know 4th was so easy to go down to from 5th, NO MORE "R" grind.

Actually on this 901 R is top left and first below it (on a dogleg). This then allows a straight shift from 2nd to 3rd but means you have to be careful that you don’t push straight forward from first into R.

I will try changing all bushings etc and see what happens though.

Thanks
Sam

Sam, The 1st to 2nd shift should be nice and slow. The 901 really likes the 3 finger approach to shifting. I have had my 71 for almost 23 years now and have never ground R when shifting from 1 - 2. I get a good amount of track time in also and have yet to find R or even a mis shift. The 901 is not a modern box and if treated nicely will shift fantastic for many years.
If you feel you need some gated action look into the Rennshift product and also the Seine Gate Shift product. I think WEVO even has a product.

Good luck

Oh I see, I assumed from your Avatar you had and 85 like me. Doesn't it have a lock out like my shifter from 5th to 4th. In your case 1st to 2nd?

Draco, There is a lock out for R. You have to kinda of push down, left and up to access R. Still with over aggressive shifting out of 1st you can find R if you "force" it.

All, thanks – I am hoping that a little freshening of the linkage and bushings and careful shifting will save me. I have been spoilt by the G50 and almost forgotten the fun and finesse of shifting these cars! I guess I better brush up on my double clutching too until I do some syncro work….
