Exclamation 911 - 1977 Spotomatic 3 speed - a few issues and some help please

Hi to all

I have just purchased a 1977 911.... So far the 911 has been great.

But I have a few problems and I need info from the greater 911 world.

1. The Speedo and odometer have just stopped working.
The speedo shows no life and the odometer ticks over to 1 and then stops.

2. Not all the time but the gears are very hard to find... they just grind.
I have checked the transmission fluid and it looks to be OK.

3. The demister fan also wont blow the air onto the windscreen.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Nice find! Late sportos are very hard to find. I'd love to have one.

The hard shifting can be a few things - check the clutch adjustment, clean the contact points in the shifter, and maybe replace all the vacuum lines on the sporto controls. On my last sporto, the points were dirty and I had vac leaks. Once they were fixed, it was good as new.

You might need to have the speedo rebuilt if you've verified it's not the speedo cable (or does 77 have an electronic speedo?).

The heater/defroster controls are baffling to me. I had to read the manual to figure it out myself on my '91.

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply.

The Speedo and odometer electronic... loose connection fixed.

Are there any good sites or items I can read for the transmission.
How to check the vacuum lines.... etc.

Thanks

http://sportomatic.org/

That's a starting point.

Do a search for sportomatic here on the forums, I'm sure you'll find everything you need. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Phone # is on my web site.

Thanks again for your help

I replaced a number of the suspect vacuum pipes on the weekend.
The gears now work like a treat... very smooth. Very Very impressed with the sportomatic.

Still an issue with the oil gauge not working... this week ends project.
I shall check this site for more info.

Thanks again.

Check the oil level with the dipstick, I thought my guage was bad or the sender and the dealership had not put in the right amount of oil at the oil change! :-)
