I repaired a set of pre-74's that had some impact damage. I ended up selling them and never used them myself, so I cant say how it really turned out, but it looked fine. Take it to a muffler shop and have them pressure test them to make sure there are no leaks in the headers themselves. Tack weld the boxes to the headers, don't solid weld these as they expand a different rates.

Good Luck.
Nick.

I think it depends entirely whether the damage is from rust or hitting/dragging over a solid object. I have welded header tubes at cracks from hitting something and had no problems. And, the tin that carries the hot air to the passenger compartment is not even attached to the header tubes ... it is stamped and folded/crimped into place around the header tubes rather tightly!

If the damage is from rust, I recommend discarding and replacing them ... Carbon Mononoxide poisoning is silent and deadly!

Another heat exchanger question,
I got a 72 with mechanical fuel injection, there is a switcher box, to either take in cold air or hot air from the heat exchanger, but the previous owner replaced the heat exchanger with a box with no "output" is it possible to cut into it to hook it up to the switcher? or do I need to replace it?, or will the car run betture without? Sorry for the untechnicall lingo here But thanks in advance

No need to keep the flapper box. Was used to strictly for emissions purposes. Doesn't have any effect, at least that I can discern, in performance either good or bad.

Flapper box, now were getting technicall , jk anyway, I was told it would make acceleration smoother?? When I floor it now I have a loss of power then it jumps. Any suggestions? Thanks I was considering an aftermarket ignition (Jacobs Ignitions) do you think that would help or be worth the $$.

I believe that you are referring to the "warm up regulator". As a prior poster said, this box is for cleaning up vehicle emissions by getting the car up to normal operating temp as quick as possible. After an SSI upgrade on my 73, I am in the process of taking mine off too.
