anti-seize on wheel lugs/nuts
In the past, everyone said never put anything on wheel lugs/nuts. Recently, some said to use lube on them. I tried grease on my old BMW and MB several times with no problem. They come off easier. For several months, I use anti-seize on the thread and also on the nut's head where it come in touch with the wheels, according to someone who has very much knowledge in here. Now, everytime taking the nuts off, I get scared. They are like butter, too easy to come off.
What is your thought?

You only need a little anti-seize. And, with proper torquing, the nuts should stay put. You do torque the lugnuts, right?

On alloy nuts or open headed steel? Steel and open no need....on the alloy ones, something is needed due to propensity of breaking off at the crown. Do a search on OH CRAP....how do I drill off the broken alloy nut?

I use anti-seize, after torquing a alum hex off just leaving the nut face. If you check your torque you should be safe. I have not had any loosen but I check every 250-500 miles.

of course I searched. That's way I said "according to someone who has very much knowledge in here". The erason why I asked again is because I realized it's like "butter".

I am still using the stock black aluminum nuts. MT930, I rarely check them again, once in a while only. Usually I torque and leave them. Recently, when putting anti-seize on the nut's head, I am curious and check several times. Each tiem I check, I could be able to tight some of them a little more. That makes me feel a little scared. doyle, I use the one from Autozone, whichever brand it is. It look silver.

I put it on the threads only. This keeps the dis-similar metal contact to a minimum, but keeps the holding friction on the (larger diameter) locking taper.

There is no right answer. Use what you feel comfortable with.

On mine, I never seen the whole "rounded" area has the contact with the wheel's hole. Only a small area does, maybe this is why.
Below is the nuts on the Fuch. ![]() below is, I draw, how it is on the CCW wheels. The contact area (black) is even smaller. There is a little top area, immediate surround the lug, which goes inside the wheel's hole. Which means the hole ont he wheel is too bigger than the lug. Looks like the holes on the Fuch fit better. ![]()

And Porsche says to use a particular type of anti-seize and to put it not only on the threads but on the curved face of the lug nut. |
