Front and Rear Main seal installation tool..............

I am in the process of doing some repairs and preventive maintenance on the engine out of my '80 SC. One of the jobs was to replace the front and rear crankshaft main seals. Since I don't like to hammer or knock in a seal, I made these tools to gently press the seals into place:

This is the tool for the front seal. It is a schedule 40 pvc fitting that is the same outside diameter as the front seal. The threaded rod is a piece of SAE threaded rod with the end ground down and rethreaded for the 12x1.5mm threads in the pulley end of the crankshaft. The large washer is one of the motor mount washers. Just assemble, center the tool on the seal and turn the nut on the threaded rod. The seal goes in easy as can be. Be certain to liberally coat the seal with grease before installing.

This is the tool for the rear seal. I used 3 pieces of threaded rod with the ends rethreaded to the 10x1.25 thread for the crankshaft flywheel flange. I used 3 to be able to press evenly on the seal. Just assemble the tool, center the seal and then tighten the nuts on the threaded rod. Tighten evenly working around the three rods. This one worked very well also. The pvc fitting here is a 4" x 3" reducer. I recommend taking the seals to the hardware store to make certain that you find a fitting that matches the seal as closely as possible. Total cost was about $12 - $13.
