915 Tranny Problems

I've got a 79sc with a 915. The car doesn't engage first of fifth gear anymore. All the other gears engage fine. It feels like it wants to engage first, but it kicks out if any throttle is given at all. All the bushings appear to be fine. Unfortunately I wasn't driving the car when this started. I'm thinking it might not be internal due to the fact that first and fifth went at the same time. Is there anything I might be missing before I go digging into the trans? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Start with the easy stuff. Check your shifter coupling adjustment. It is located under the carpet in the back seat floor area on top of the tunnel. Remove the cover plate to find the coupler. Do a search for coupler adjustment and find the procedure.

Drain the trans oil, check out the plug.

look for shards of metal, sounds like busted dog-teeth to me and you don't want those being ground up into the rest of the trans. I lost a ring and pinion that way.

Oh, and stop driving it ASAP

I haven't driven the car since it happened. Hopefully I'll get a chance to drain the fluid this weekend if the coupler adjustment is fine. If it is the dog teeth, what would have caused it? Is it possible to have had a stress fracture that finally decided to grenade?

I second what Tony says. Number one rule of Porsche work do the simple stuff first
