I've got a '79sc and need to find a good mechanic in the Seattle area. I saw a Paul Weir ad in a Panorama and he says he's the most sophisticated Porsche rebuild facility in the world. Is this true? Any recommendations? Thanks for any info.
O.K. Thanks for all your help. I've made an appt. w/ Mr. Walker for later this week. I'll let you know how it goes. [This message has been edited by howlgrll (edited 04-03-2001).] |

I personally use Denny Akers on Capitol Hill or Redmond European in Redmond. I've heard good things about John Walker's Workshop in Greenwood & a couple of other shops in Bellevue.

I'd take my car to John Walker's.

Take your car to John Walker. When I couldn't get a PPI from him, he recommended Denny Akers, who treated me fine as well. You'll find Akers up on Capitol Hill; John in the upper Phinney/Greenwood area.
No financial, etc. Jw |

You can also try Chris' German Auto in Bellevue near Bel-Red Rd. I've gone there to have work done and get good advice.

So do we change the thread name "Paul Weir" and turn this into a "Go Walker" thread? ;>
So what about Paul Weir? They've seemingly recovered from the Chapter ? to now run a business that rebuilds trans and engines, but they are VERY clear they DO NOT sell parts. This has to have been part of the settlement. In all events, the lack of used parts has got to be a hit on engine rebuilds as it would seem PW will have to go to parts vendors just like an average joe. Still, there is much to be said for bulk engine rebuilding. With all respect to the independent, the cost of an engine rebuild is the same as just telling me to sell the car. Or use the cost to buy an entire car and pull the engine; it is that much. What a quandry! You can't afford the independent, are unsure of the bulk rebuilders, and get butterflies thinking about doing it yourself. Again, I must ask why there is not a hands-on class for this sort of thing. When I was building bicycle framesets at an outfit here in Seattle (Rodriguez and Ericksons) we would have a hands-on class in the winter time wherein over a sequence of weekends the shop was given over to layman who were handheld by me and my collegues through an entire frame: from design to final alignment and tap/face/etc. I would so appreciate someone doing this here in Seattle, but don't know if it is worth it for the person who'd have to supply shop, insurance, and predict what parts and machining aspects would have to be purchased/performed. Ah well, I'm just the fool to pull my own engine. Heck, the transmission scares me much more than the engine. Again, rambling! Jw |

I'd recommend Chris's German Auto Service in Bellevue, as well - Phone 425-462-9296. Chris is very knowledgeable and reasonable - he's rebuilt my 3.2 and solved many unresolved difficulties others could (or would) not figure out.

Jdub - Bruce Anderson offers just such a class in CA. He also offers a tune-up and transmission class. Unfortunetly you would have to burn a week of vacation to take all three, whereas a local evening class might be more convenient.

And it was real spendy like $9000 and didn't even split the case! alot of over charging. like $400 for a set of ring's The guy's at redmond have said that walker's workshop is good and that would be MY next choice

I have used all the guys mentioned, and am still using Akers, and Chris Powell...but...I found another guy in West Seattle, a Porsche factory trained tech who worked for Weir, and Barrier. His name is John Seger, does evening and weekend work on Porsche's by referral, great guy, GREAT prices. He has a full shop with a lift, and he's a local vintage racer. His number is 206 938-3447. No financial affiliation etc. etc. I also like the fact I can take the car there after work and on weekends.
