front suspension question...

Here's one of those hard questions, because I have to verbally describe how something feels. (So please bear with me!)
I have a 1989 911 carrera targa. Whenever I turn hard to either side, the front end feels like the tires are falling off!! The only way I can describe it is like the wheels are loose, but all lugs are tight and wheels didn't seem to wobble last time I had it up on a jack.

My question is: would wheel bearings be the cause? Or what else should I be looking for?

Thanks for any input!

Is there any noise? If you have a zero toe or worst yet any toe out it can feel jumpy..

Are you hearing any clunking noises, especially when you go over bumps? Other things to check are ball joints and tie rods. Wheel bearings could be the culprit but other things to check are the bolts holding the steering rack and the front a-arms. Might be a good idea to have the front end properly inspected by a mechanic you trust.

There isn't any noise, it just feels like you have turned too far or something and the wheels feel like they are falling over. I do have kind of a dull whine from the from when turning at low speed but it seems like that may be coming from the steering column.

have you checked your rear wheel bearings for play? I wonder if the back end might have play either in the bearings or suspension and giving you that drastic feeling up front?
Either way it sounds like you need a pro to look at it as it could be dangerous.

What brand tires do you have and how old are they? Are all 4 the same manufacturer?

Tires are Yokohama ES100's. Back tires are brand new and fronts have about 60% left on them. I am going to make my first attempt at new brake pads this weekend, so I will look at the underside when it's jacked up.
Occasionally I will hear a light clunking sound when going over speed bumps, but never on bumps in the road.

I'm leaning towards ball joints. Inspect the rubber boots for tears. They could also be dried out. Slow speed clunks over speed bumps make me think that's what it is.

Does it only happen when you are turning at full lock (left or right)? If so, your tire may be rubbing against the inner chassis. This is a known issue with wider front tires/wheels. Check for rubbing marks in the wheel well.

I had loose sway bar bolts and it sounds like your problem. Check to see if they ar tight.
