Oil Cooler ??

I have some leaks fron my oil cooler am going to remove it, clean it up and replace all the seals. According to the Bentley manual the engine needs to be dropped roughly 3 inches in order to do this. Is it truly necessary to lower the engine in order to remove the cooler and if so can this be lowered far enough by simply undoing the motor mounts or is there more that needs to be disconnected in order for the engine to lower this far? I do not want to bind anything that I cannot see.
