colour code

I have a very early 911L Sportomatic repainted for restoration. Please, can anyone tell me what colour corresponds to the code 17420? (could be 17120 since I have doubts with the "4").
Thank you in advance for your help.
Jose Hinarejos.

Jose:

My references indicate that the 911L model was only produced in 1968. External color codes for 1968, including standard and special order colors, are four digir format, starting with 68 (i.e. 6854= Metallic Dark red).

The only 17XXX numbers I found for an early car were for 1967-1968, which had special order colors of 17656= Lido Gold and 17657 = Medium Ivory.

Thank you very much Al for your help. I think there must be more colors than those contemplated in the "Red Book", "Original 911..." etc.
If you'll reach some new information, please, let me know.

Jose Hinarejos.

check this site. You might see a color you have on the car.

Jose,

This number also does not appear on the Elferhelfer site either.
Can you post a pic of the colour tag in the drivers door jamb ?

Cheers,
Dennis.:)

The problem is that I'm working abroad and my son collected the car I bought via Internet. My son tells me this is the number (17420 or 17120) in the colour tag in the driver door jamb. I've consulted a few books and Internet pages and now I suppose the only solution should be to write to Porsche because the number is really there.
Thank you Dennis.
Cheers.

You have not stated what color the car is now. Is it pink, purple, green? Maybe this would be a start to help identify the color code.

Sorry about that but was obvious for me the actual colour is not the original. Actually the car is badly painted in red.
Jose.

Hi everyone, my 66 911 has a color code no. 17616, would anyone know what the code color is? thanks, rommy

Jose Hinarejos 01-27-2008 04:37 AM

Looking in those Porsche specialist books like Porsche 911 Red Book by Patrick Papernie, 911-912, A Restorers Guide to Authenticity by B. Johnson, Original Porsche 911 by Peter Morgan and different Internet pages about early 911s and 912s, there's not your colour code, Rommy neither mine. There are some codes very close as 17656, 17657 (thanks again Al) or 16153.
I suppose that almost everybody is drinking in the same fountains of knowledge and not only in colour matters; of course we need to open our horizon of investigation. I'm pretty sure there are more colour than those we are seeing in those closed lists.

Photos of the various unknown colour badges would help 'prove' the existence of these #'s.
Removing some of these badges may reveal the true original colour underneath.
Getting more information directly from the factory may be the only way to track down some of the special option colours. In some cases these may be one-off instances of the paint used.
