The reason I don't like the K&N is because it's noisy. Anyone find this to be the case?

I replaced the stock air filter for a K&N in my BMW and I could not tell one iota of a difference (except my wallet was thinner:mad). No surging idle, no extra noise, no more hp, nothing, the same as the 1 year old used paper filter. Guess another vote against replacing it. What kind of noise do you mean...

if you're referring to those ultra-crappy VDO odometers that malfunction, cost a million bucks to replace, and don't work worth worth a damn... then it's safe to say that ANYONE makes better odometers than VDO http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

i talked to a Porsche mechanic at tech inspection last year and said "i don't know how far since the brake fluid was changed because the odometer doesn't work"

he said

"don't worry, most of the Porsches i've seen don't have functioning odometers"

it's a shame that even the best car companies can be scammed by using shoddy products sooner or later. i have a spare VDO odometer that i paid $$$ for and the damn thing broke without any fault on my part. when the snow melts i'm going to use it for target practice until i run out of ammo.

honestly, how many people here have had the odometer replaced in their Porsche at least once in it's existance.

I just put back in my stock filter, and then I had my wife kick me for buying the K&N. I think using this thing created a vacuum leak, and actually made my car perform very poorly. I glanced inside the air box, and it looks like the closed loop system includes a breather hose to the crankcase ventilation system. Once again, trying to fix something that ain't broke!

You guys convinced me. I came home and replaced the Power Flow cone filter ($125) with the stock air box and paper filter, then went for a drive. I did not notice any difference in power, but the idle was _much_ more even and steady at about 800rpm.
I am so gullible.

I can't say anything bad about the K&N's except that they are expensive. Everyone buys them for the name. I bought a pair of generic K%N type air filters for a third of the cost! Since on the 912 they are the same size as the OEM there isn't a loss of performance but there isn't a gain in performance. Also you don't have to replace them, and for $20 I felt it was worth it.
