Replacing Airbox - What else to do?
 

I'm replacing the airbox on my '78 SC after finding that it had an almost unnoticeable crack where the top and bottom halves go together. Being that access behind it is nearly impossible with it installed, what other items should I replace, adjust, paint, detail, etc. while I have access to them?

I'd definitely do the oil thermostat o-ring and perhaps the breather cover gasket and maybe the oil pressure switch if it's been flaky.

How's you engine sound mat? That would be easier to do with the air box off.

The tubular rubber pieces that connect the air box to the intake runners should probably be replaced, particularly if they are stretched out, like they're pregnant.

Also, the intake runner gaskets between the runners and the heads might be good to replace. And finally, the injector o-rings.

Definitely replace the Oil Thermostat O-ring. I neglected this, and will probably have to remove my engine again to replace this $1.25 part. In the meantime, my car is leaking oil fairly profusely.

pull off the heater fan, and the ribbed rubber air boot on the sensor plate for clearance. unplug all the wire plugs, remove the 12 nuts and washers from the intake runners to the heads, and the 1 nut on the throttle lever plate. pull off the oil breather hoses from the oil tank, and remove the COMPLETE intake unit as a lump. don't take various pieces off it to try to make it easier, it's not. watch where the breather hose slides thru, and reinstall it the same way. you can't get it on afteryou install the intake, without lowering the engine. also, account for all the nuts and washers you removed. it's easy for one to fall unnoticed down an intake port. bad news. if you have A/C, put it on a blanket on the RR fender. you didn't ask how to do it, but i thought i'd put my 2c worth in.

Dont forget the pop-off valve. Its easier to put in with the air box out...

Thanks everyone. I had planned on replacing the airbox, intake gaskets, sensor plate housing to airbox gasket, and the intake runner boots. The O-ring's are a great idea, and they're on the list!!

That was the oil pressure SWITCH, not sender. The one that looks kind of like a red baby spark plug with a single wire coming out of it. It activates the oil pressure idiot light on the dash.
