I read all the old posts on oil coolers. I have a 74 911 with a 2.7 that was rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago and is supposed to be putting out 210-215hp I am moving to Central California where it will be hot. The mechanic that rebuilt the motor says that without an oil cooler, the car will run hot in stop and go traffic during the summer. I have a RUF style front spoiler and am looking at B&B and BAT oil coolers. Any recommendations on the size and brand? Anything to be aware of?

Does your 74 not have an external cooler at all right now? Plumbing one from scratch can get expensive. When you do, try to be certain that your hoses and fittings are at least AN-12. Some people (Warren included) suggest AN-16. Racer Parts Wholesale is a good source for Aeroquip lines and fittings. Hard factory lines (as opposed to flexible ones) from the thermostat to the front fender will provide additional cooling. And even front mounted, you might want to also consider a fan. In stop and go traffic, you need to keep air moving through the thing.

For a 74 2.7 most any fender mount will do except the oem trombone. A sppoiler mount is expensive over kill. the B&B is excellent but just barley fits in the Ruf spoiler with a lot fof work. Something the same length and height but a a bit thinner will be easier to mount. Here is a pic of the B&B in a Ruf spoiler.

An alternative to B&B and BAT coolers is a modified RX-7 cooler. I believe this is what AJ-USA uses for their front mount cooler. Also, Earl's has a line of coolers that may fit. I think you have plenty of room in your Ruf-style front spoiler.
I don't think, even with a large front spoiler, there's room for a pusher fan unless you modify the front pan sheetmetal. A fan is more of a necessity when the cooler is buried in the front fender. A large, front-mount cooler should be fine for your 2.7. I'd also recommend using the factory hard lines from the thermostat to the front just for the added cooling from tube's surface area. You can find these on the used market; the only hassle is packaging and shipping 10 feet of rigid, irregular-shaped tubing. Regards, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars/ |

I picked up the RX-7 Cooler. Spoke with AJ USA they use the B&B and do not sell the lines seperately. The whole kit is $700+.
Question.... 1)Has anyone ever used the sandwich plate that fits between the oil filter and the tank to pull lines off of to the cooler? 2)Does anyone know the pitch and size of the RX-7 cooler fittings? [This message has been edited by mikez (edited 04-04-2001).] |
