early bumper seal replacement photos

I could use some help locating an article with details on bumper seal replacing . My 73 had the bumpers off (basket case ) so I have no original reference to go by . The HOW TO is no problem, but I assume the side of the seal with multiple grooves goes up, but want to do it only once .

There should be a short (maybe 3/16") cont. metal tab at the bottom of your fenders that fits into a groove in the rubber seal. The new seals for my 70T came with a double sided tape strip that helps placement while you are remounting your bumpers.

Front Bumper Seal - DIY

There is a great thread on this in the Technical Forum. Try a search on Front Bumper. If I have a chance I'll see if I can find it.

Chances are you will have to cut your seal into two, maybe three, pieces and assemble them onto the car to get a nice fit/finish. I wasted one seal just trying to get it right . . .thank God they are cheap. The center piece that fits under the hood needs to have it's bead carefully inserted into the runner. I used generous amounts of soapy water and a kitchen spoon with a soft edge to work the bead into place. Take care with this step 'cause you will split the rubber bead if you apply too much pressure. The next challenge is just trial and error getting the pieces under the grills/lights to mate up to the center piece nicely and then glueing it up to stay in place when you re-attach the spoiler. Just a note: I removed the two-sided adhesive on my seals because it just got in the way when I was trying to get the seals lined up. Then I just used a bit of rubber adhesive (3M, by choice) in little spots to attach the seals to the body under the grill/lights. Of course, you will want to clean off the surfaces before assembly.

I'll try to find the thread . . . it had some nice pictures that were helpful to me.

After you've done it once you'll be a pro.

Cheers,

Tom

picture's worth a 1000 words, right?...

personal lube on center section to negotiate bead into place. hey, at least the car is getting some... I used a dining spoon that had a round handle.

Then I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive and painters tape to keep the fender sections in place.

seal

Thanks, did you have a smoke when you were done ? I used close up photos to get mine installed. Used 3M also worked great. I wish I could have better luck installing my new rear side window seals. They wont fit into the alum. frame enough to allow them to fit into the openings. My old seals had one large rib on the inside instead of 2 small ones like the new ones.
Oh well other tasks to do in the meantime.

Thanks Eddie

you might want to check on the side seal availability. seems to me those parts were superseded to new ones. i also think i've heard of someone else on here trimming off that second lip, but that would be the bandaid fix...

there are a lot of rubber/metal interfaces on these cars that i just can't imagine factory workers spending all day massaging into place. a few that come to mind:

side seals
front bumper
lower rocker trim

i mean, really, every time you want to R&R your S trim Rockers, it takes 4 hours... better work that into the equation when you change torsion bars...
