Besides the obvious exposure to weather, etc., would I be nuts to have my car shipped from the west to east coasts in an open car hauler rather than an enclosed carrier? I got a price of less than $800 coast to coast on DAS. I was planning on driving it, but it seems that this is too good a deal to pass up.

Other than exposure, I'd make sure that they don't cram it on a trailer loaded with other vehicles. For starters most of the time you see cars stacked and at angles. You don't want your car at an angle because of the opertunity for oil and other fluids getting in places they shouldn't be and on top of that there is a chance that a car stacked overhead might leak oil or something bad all over your paint!

I'd pay the extra $400 or $500 and have it shipped in an enclosed truck. Your car will thank you for it.

Having been in the car business for a number of years I have shipped many many cars long distances in open carriers. Many of these cars were high end models and I really never had a problem. I would not worry about it. Just see if you could request that your car is not on top and in the front over the cab. The vehicle in that position always gets the most bugs splattered on it. ------------------ Donald Weintraub 1980 Porsche Red 911SC Coupe |

Well, an unnamed hauler whose initials are
D.A.S. got my C4 from the West Coast to the East Coast in a speedy 7 days. I opted for the open trailer. Unfortunately, it arrived with a serious dent above the right rear light lens, and, of course, a busted lens. While the claims person was quite cheery, she told me that their liability limit was only $250. I can't believe it. I can't even get a replacement lens for less than that. I am pissed. |

I shipped my 911SC from Texas to Florida and when the car got here there was a large door ding on the right door BOOM!! the driver swore up and down that it was there and 250.00 was his only liability, long story short after looking at the dent for 6 months I called a paintless removal guy and he popped it out for 125.00. lesson learned, no open trailers when you ship. The love bugs also took me the whole weekend to remove.

As risky as open trailers might be (and I had no problems at all shipping my car from Arizona to Los Angeles that way), the likelihood of damage on a cross-country drive is probably much greater.
But the fun factor is also a lot higher. And it's Spring. I'd say if you've got the time, drive the thing! ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 04-03-2001).] |

I'm with Jack. Spring is springing all across the land. This is an opportunity of a lifetime.

I'm with Jack. Spring has sprung. There is nothing like the exhilaration of driving a pcar. When I picked mine up in Lima, Ohio; I drove it home (1000 miles in two days). I spent the whole time with this silly grin on my face. These cars are made to be driven
