Post Horn question, 88 Carrera

The low-pitched horn in my 88 is not working, hence the unseemly "clown horn" effect. Since it's difficult to use the clutch wearing giant red shoes, I'd like to take care of this problem. Is it the horn itself that is bad? Are there separate relays for each horn? Is it really necessary to remove the entire front bumper as the Bentley manual suggests? Tips?

Vic, I think I can finally help someone else, for a change, albeit simply by passing along advice I just got from Warren. (Thanks again Early S Man.) My post is just below here under the heading "Horn Stuck On". I believe there is just one horn relay. When my horn was stuck on, both were blowing. As I have tried to get at the actual horns, I have decided you need to pull of the bumper as described in the Bentley Manual. Once you get the bumper off replacing the horn seems fairly easy.

Here is Warren's advice:

MRM,
There is a horn relay, round, above the fuse block in the trunk. Your owner's manual should identify which one it is, though Bentley (confusing?) says it is the middle one of 5 round relays.

Yes, that is it! Get a couple, and you will have a spare for some other future problem with the same relay type ... it is the most common relay for multiple applications in each 911 since '65!

Vic,

I've also got an 88 Carrera and had to replace one of my horns, was able to get an extendo socket wrench up to the single nut bracket holding the 2 horns on without removing bumpers. Nut came off, horns came down, was able to wiggle my hands up there to disconnect the electrical connectors and replace horn. Hope it helps..

Let me get this straight.. Are you guys saying that if one of the horns is not working all you have to do is replace the relay and all will be right again??? I too have the clown horn going on... I don't use the horn anymore... I just slam into the rear of the cars in front of me if I'm in a hurry...
Pete

AJ USA has some clown pedals to accomodate the clown shoes, not to worry.
