I forgot where this part goes
Stupid question from someone who should have taken more pics as I took things apart. What does this hose and tube connect to? Thanks

Kurt,
The drain/vent tube with rubber tip (tip straight down) gets bolted to the top piece (in front of tin, actually outside the engine compartment) of engine tin that arches over the bellhousing, to the right of the starter, by the M6 bolt closest to the transaxle ... the small vent hose goes to the front side of the air cleaner housing. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 03-31-2001).] |

Recently checking for source of oil leak, determined that all oil return tubes are not leaking, source seemed to be coming from this airbox overflow tube or the oil pressure sending unit seal. Noticed that the oil vent tube from the oil tank to air box always seems to be blowing small amounts of oil into the airbox, is this normal? Could a vacuum leak cause this?

shakenbake,
Thats the vent/overflow tube, check your oil level in the tank you may be overfilling it. Bruce Anderson recommends fill to the half way mark on the oil stick, of course, with the car level and at operating temp. |
Chris,
You might try cleaning the flame trap where the 25 mm vent line from oil tank goes into the airbox ... cylindrical, 2" long, 1" diameter slip-fit object made of brass, with perforated ends, and coarse shredded metal visible inside. Early 73.5 CIS engines used the same part 901.107.729.00 as earlier carbed and MFI engines. On early US vehicles with PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) systems, it used to be recommended that the PCV valves be cleaned at every oil change, though that practice has fallen by the wayside over the decades. If your flametrap is dirty or partly clogged, the velocity through it would increase, and the likelihood of oil getting through to the inside of the air box seems probable. Running your oil tank at a level such that at max. normal operating temps (210-220 degrees F) the oil level expands to no higher than midway between the marks on dipstick -- 1 liter below the 'Full' mark ... will minimize oil getting into the airbox! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
I am putting things back together and noticed the rubber tip on this cracked. Went to the local dealer to pick one up and he told me that this piece doesn't go on a CIS car, "only for older carbeurated models". Is he nuts???

David,
Yes, he is completely crazy! It was used on carbed, MFI, and CIS cars! Per Volume 3, Section 2, p. 0.1 - 3/1, a picture of the clutch side of CIS engine with said vent tube! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
