74 bumper to 75+ bumperettes

Could someone measure the distance between the bumperettes on a 75+. I just bought a pair of bumperettes and they are not the right ones(they are the bigger ones), but would look better than the 74 skinny ones. I'm planning on simply measuring them and drilling the bumper.
I need the distance :
Left bumperette |<-------------------------->| Right bumperette

Much thanks !

Pat

Most people with the later bumperettes would rather have the skinny '74s! Looks like you want to do the opposite and fit the big "bumper tit" style. If it were me, I'd want '74 bumperettes on a '74, but sounds like the later ones are the only one you have.

Just went to my garage and measured, and my '89 (the bumpers were the same for '75-89) bumperettes are 14.5 inches measuring as you described. I measured from the center (by the license plate lights) as they do taper a bit at the top and bottom, so I would make your marks accordingly.

Jay, thank you very much. Before I drill holes, I'll throw this out there.
Anyone wish to trade new 75+ bumperettes for new or excellent condition 74's ?
Have:
911-505-341-02-M230 $462.50
911-505-342-02-M230 $389.75
Would like to trade for:
911-505-341-00-M136 $161.50
911-505-342-00-M136 $161.50
this would be a great deal for someone

I'm really not sure either what you wanna do. I have an SC with the fat rear bumperettes. I'd love to have the skinny (Euro) style. Is that what you have....more or less...? I'd likely do a trade. I'm in Grass Valley..north of Sac.

I bought new bumperettes from another Pelican, I gave him the PN for the skinny ones and he sent me the fat ones. So now I either make the fatties work or find skinny ones.

OK...I guess we both want the same thing. Actually I wonder if the Euro bumperettes are available somewhere...either OEM or knock off. Any one know?

Thanks...I just found them too! I had been looking for 'Euro Bumperettes' and they are listed as Bumper Guards. Silly me. Spendy huh ?

Here's a pic of my old 78 converted to Euro bumperettes. If you look closely you will see where I capped the four holes that remain from the fat US bumpers. You can get used ones in the classifieds sometimes or at dcauto.com. Make sure you get the 911 version not the 930 - they are different.

Ulrich,
Many thanks for posting that. Nice to know how they will look. The plugged hole don't offend me at all and I've done that too. Actually I had thought the guards were the same width all the way back and did not widen like they appear to..but they do look MUCH cleaner. Love the duck too...mine is being made as we speak.

I guess there is no way to change them out w/o removing the bumper?

Will,
No need to remove the bumper. You can reach into the bumper cavity while on your back. It's not easy but it's doable. Wear a long sleeve shirt, I really scraped up my arms on the bumper edges.

How about no rubber bumpers. I removed the rubber bumpers from my 74.

I've seen guys who have done that and it looks nice. You are, however, removing alot of rear end protection IMHO.

It seems that those with 3.2's need to notice the profile of the valance. I wanted to do they same thing, but found the skinnies don't fit the lower valance on the 3.2. The SC & the 3.2 have different lower valances. The only way would seem to obtain Euro 3.2 bumpers for the skinny look; otherwise change the valance.
Anyone notice this?

Yes,

The Carrera uses the same part as the turbo, as the valance is in a different position. It is more rearward.

I doubt you'd want to simply change the valance, as Porsche thought there was sufficient reason to move it in the Carrera. It's likely for clearance to the muffler. The turbo had an additional heat shield in this area.

The heat shield loks like it's the same unit for the turbo as well as for the carrera. I noticed clearance for the turbo housing stamped on it.

Might not be the valence itself that's different....could possibly be the mounting hole locations on the underside of the bumper. I put a '74 bumper with the smaller guards on my '89 and retained the original valence. Everything fits just fine and there's no extra holes to plug.

The valance for the SC, Carrera and turbo are all slightly different. They all mount in essentially the same fashion. The difference is the curvature and is more obvious at the bottom of the valance than the top.
