Alternator Belt breaks again.....
Alternator Belt breaks again.....
Last week my alternator belt on my 993 broke.... Got it replaced and now it's broken AGAIN! Right before it broke again I hear a awful screechy noise, smell of burning rubber (the belt) and I check and it's broken again...... Does the mean without a doubt that my alternator is shot? Something else? help please... thanx, SvK

If the fan spins freely without the belt, then it's not likely that the alternator bushings are bad. Just make sure that the alternator is bolted into the fan housing, and that nothing inside the engine compartment is loose and being sucked into the fan. Also do not overtighten the fan belt. Maybe a cat crawled up into your engine bay?

It's extremely easy to screw up the adjustment of this. Back in the old days, when I didn't know how to do it properly, it came off, and my 2.7 in my 914-6 cooked itself. Read the chapter in the 101 Projects book. At the time I screwed it up, I had two degrees from MIT, and I still screwed it up - it's not 100% obvious how to do it "correctly". The nut and spacers should bottom out, and *not* be compressing the belt. You have to turn the belt when tightening in order to achieve this. Tricky.
