Best bay area transmission rebuild shop
Wheres the best place in the bay area to get my gearbox rebuilt? It's a 911/01 from a '70 T.

My mechanic here in Fresno rebuilds Porsche transmissions, engines, and does service in his home garage. And he charges about $40 per hour.

If you really want it done 100% right, go to Wevo. Jerry Woods is also a great option. Forget about the so-so mobile mechanics.

With 30 years of experience around Porsches I would not call Tom a so - so mechanic. Use the search feature and type in Tom Amon. You be the judge.

WEVO is by far the absolute best place to start. You cannot beat the experience and expertise there. Jerry Woods is also an excellent choice. These people have significant racing experience and pedigrees. Both have supported prominent sports car racing teams for many, many years. And they have excellent reputations in the PCA on a national basis.
Amongst the more well-known Bay Area "street car oriented" mechanics, Done Wise, Mark at Sportech and Gary Dielacher all have good reputations in the PCA. Here on Pelican, a lot of guys have great things to say about some of the mobile providers. When I ask about them amongst long time PCA members, I have gotten mixed comments. I value the PCA perspectives extremely highly. I trust the PCA to provide the best advice, especially given the history of Porsche racing and "enthusiasm" in this area. Many of the best service providers have ties to the world championship-winning Porsche efforts based here in the 70s and 80s. Did you know that the company Automotion sprung from that world? The Golden Gate Region has forums so you could ask there as well. - Mike

I forgot one more lead: Bob Grigsby at RMG in Sunnyvale. Even if he and his team of Dan and Dan don't do transmissions like yours, you can be sure that they will send you to a good place.

Do you have 30 years experience with him?
There's plenty of people that work their jobs for that long and longer and never shine. Some even who stay quite dull. I'm using the "so-so" classification from personal experience. I've had him to my house seven or eight times to work on one of my (or my father's) 911's. Needless to say, I don't use him anymore. |
