What kind of thread is in the AGLA wheel cover kit?

When I did this project, the kit didn't come with enough thread to do the last 3 inches or so. I got some other strong thread from a craft shop but it's inferior to the thick stuff that came with the kit.

I need some more thread similar as I can to the AGLA stuff. Is there anywhere I could buy this? What do I ask for? I tried a leather repair place but the guy didn't understand my accent so I gave up. I emailed AGLA, but no answer.

Thanks

I had a similar experience with him last year and specified when I bought the kit to send additional thread. No problem he says, but there should be plenty. Didn't send it, tried to find it at craft shops and leather to match the pre perffed holes. Finally heard back from Alan and got more, took a few weeks. I believe the thread is either nylon or polyester, I might have some more info, I'll check.

Two years ago I ordered some blue thread from AGLA to rework my wheel leather. It took several months to get due to their 'problems'. I agree it appears to be a polyester. Very tough stuff.

You might try a millinery store.

try sailrite sailmaking supplies- they have "whipping cord" which is a heavy UV stable thread (Marlow I believe is the manufacturer). I tried several threads from craft stores including beading thread, emroidery floss (cotton and linen) none of which whould hold up to a strain when I was pulling the leather seams togther.

There used to be a guy here that used gut to lace wheels. Don't know where he is now.

Found some heavy thread for tarps, etc. at Michael's last year that worked OK.

Boat shop, tent repair, etc whould have something.

Seems better than waiting months for AGLA to come through.

They make fishing line in a wide variety of materials now a days... might be worth checking out.

I'd be careful of some of the high strength fishing lines- they tend to be very thin (on purpose) which may tend to cut through the leather on your wheel- especially if you are re-lacing it.

the whippin gcord is good for a couple of reasons- same approximate thickness as original, high tensile strength, waxed so it threads easy, and UV stable.

It's pretty cheap too- I think $4 for twenty or so yards. I bought blue- thought it would look cool with the blue leather wheel....

I too tried to get thread from AGLA as well as a new kit- no response to calls or emails- could be because of the holidays, but it is pretty easy to set up and auto-response letting customers know if their messages are even being acknowledged...

Steve - do you still need thread to finish - I came across 2 - 2 ft pieces and 4 - 1ft pieces - there are yours if you want them. This is the ALGA thread by the way.

Porsche Crest Stitching Thread

I'm sorry that I missed your post on this subject. When I was replacing my cabriolet fabric, and re-covering my seats, I bought an entire bobbin or spool of black. It is treated, coated, etc. I probably have enough to do 40-50 more cars. Glad it worked out for you. Good luck!! Tony.

Unhappy Crs Disease

Hi David, I ordered it from a shop where I was living at the time. The shop has closed since I moved, and I can't remember who the actual supplier was. I am sorry, but that damn CRS disease kicks in at times. Tony.

FSE Robline and Marlow both make a waxed, UV stable polyester whipping cord (used to bind the ends or rope/lines for boats) and they come in a variety of fade-resistant colors- I used the blue on my wheel after trying several other types of thread. Turned out great. Great yeild strength too- so putting the line under tension to pull the leather together on the wheel is much easier. It is availabel through a lot of sailmaking and boating supply places...

Best-
